Up at 5.15, quick cup of tea, gear in car and off for a morning stalk. 30 mile drive was good as the roads were clear, until I got to about the 28 mile mark, then FOG. The entire estate and surrounding area was blanketed in the stuff, drove from one end to the other and then from top to bottom as it got light but no sign of it clearing. Sat in the car for half an hour, no improvement, so then took the dog out to stretch his legs *marco* , bumped a deer in the wood but not worried as a safe shot was out of the question with the fog. Got back into the car and went home, fog cleared a couple of miles on from the estate. Made my self a bacon and egg sanrnie when I got back home to cheer myself up.

funny hill fog early, and lowland fog later.
We (max, a mystery man and myself) stalked an area full of deer.
Me and my guest "bounced"2 and Max had 5 stood under and behind the seat 15ft from him and couldn't turn to get a shot.
Then after breakfast I got a call to shoot a lame buck.
He was 1of 8 and we couldn't pick him out for a shot. He eventually RAN accross the field leading the others. He was a clean 6 point buck so we gave him the benifit of doubt and if he gets no lamer we will meet him in April.

What an incredibly handsome chap the guy in the second picture is with a well toned muscle structure - centre fold material if I ever saw it - and with such a perfect shooting pose I bet he's got his DSC2........... ***wist***

Yeah you are right it was me all along. *Monkey Hanger*

When I set out this morning at 5.00am it was clear and not too cold but as I approached our agreed location it started to look increasingly misty. When I arrived I was surprised to see Malcolm, John's side-kick was shooting with us - good to meet you Malcolm so after pleasantries we transferred the tackle to John's kingcab and set out. The area was behind some farm buildings and after making sure we woke all the family up by spooking the dogs (unavoidable) Malcolm set off for the high seat whilst I accompanied John, well someone's got to look after him. *giggle*
We reached the start of the wood which had a very steep valley cutting through the middle, at it's base there was a modest but fast flowing river which served to disguise any sound the dry woodland floor made as we carefully picked our way through. It was easy to see why the deer favoured this location, very sheltered from the wind and with copious amounts of deciduous trees and good cover. Breeze, John's GSP was constantly sniffing the air often going on point before tracking further we reached about two thirds through and two deer broke cover heading straight towards "Big Red" AKA our Malcolm !! We heard a lot of barking or was it Malcolm coughing ? We never did establish that, but no shot, later we heard that a buck had challenged a smaller buck and a doe and were only a few yards from where "Big red" was perched.
Although the potential for this shoot is obviously it was not to be today and we set off back up the valley side to the car with a mental note to bring climbing gear next time.
As John said he received a call to check out a lame buck so after breakfast we set off. We found the deer easily enough they were in two groups of four. Until they moved it wasn't apparent which one was lame and in any case when we did find out it wasn't bad enough to have to humanely destroy it anyway - lucky buck. Needless to say we didn't even consider taking a doe from the car, well it would hardly qualify as stalking would it ??
Still an enjoyable morning guys, maybe better luck next time.

Well not one to be defeated, I went back the same day for the evening stalk. I went to a favorite vantage point at the head of a wooded vally and waited it out, fantastic sunny late afternoon, waited unyil late dusk then walked around the edge of the wood to see what was out on the fields, and saw the grand total of Sod all.

Off to Scotland next week for a few days, hopefully have a bit more luck.

I keep seeing the same amount too Mudman! *lol* However the other night I was on my stalking land and in the NV there were five in one field, one in another and another one in another field, it shows that they're there, we just to be in the right place at the right time. -Rabbit2-

I've been seeing loads lads, but alot of bucks.
Wednesday I saw 3 clean bucks and 2 in velvet chasing each other and a grand total (never ever seen it in yorkshire) of 44 roe on 1 estate. my 70 year old client shot a doe at 5 p.m. and was happy to leave, I wasn't I wanted to wait till dark to see how many more came out.
There were 24 in the morning and 20 in the evening,on 2 sides of the ground, definatly different deer.
Yet I can go out sometimes like friday morning and struggle to see a couple running off.

I very much doubt that she will become Mrs Spin as she has far too much brains for that! Her sister does not however so that's why I thought she would be ideal for Mike.
Expenditure? A two bob pie costs four shilling when you're courting!

...but there's always the potential of a trade-off for other "services".

When you are courting you wish you could eat it, when you are married you wish you had.
