I was chatting to a mate the other day about Larsen traps and catching the initial calling bird. I said I position the trap, then build a small nest in one of the catching compartments and then finally put an egg in the nest and one outside the trap, all this over about a week or so. The top tip which has never occurred to me is to put some silver paper in one of the catching compartments, a strip or two from one of those very shiney plastic crisp packets is ideal - why ? Well most people should know magpies love shiney objects hence the term thieving Magpie, I'll let you know how successful this has been.
