Just got 3 legal limit guns myself, have read so many stories on other forums, never been able to get a clear picture. Know you need a good reason to own one, serious pest control should suffice. Need a virtually unblemished criminal record, or lack of criminal record  I should say.
A parking ticket wont stop you getting one.
Police probably best people to ask, they issue them, I think. ;)

I have a lady friend called Penny, she shoots a .22 rimfire open sighted gun in Notts ladies County team, I'll have to try & get her to join this forum, could be interesting. She plays Badminton in a club I go to.

You'll need a good reason to own a firearm, club membership or pest control on a nomminated piece of land where you have permission. You don't neccesarily need to have a spotless record, I didn't, although my crimes were over 10 years old.

You will need a reason for each gun you wish to own mine are:

.22 air rifle Vermin
.22lr Vermin and ground game
.17 remington Long range vermin
.223 Fox
.270 Deer
12g Multi shot Pump and Semi-auto Practical shotgun, vermin and ground game and clay pigeon.

best to join a gun club you have to have tutorial then youcan join then i think it is 8 lessons or 3-4 months wichever is longer then i think the gunclu put you in for fac and the plod come and check your premises and alarm system and gun cabinet aswell as your record and you have to prove what you are using it for and what ares you are shooting in because off the ranges of the fac and the acreage you are shooting over will only allow certain guns not to sure on the last points but i dont think they are far out hope this puts a bit more light on it.

Another issue with FAC Air Gun's that Most Club Ranges they are Not Allowed

As most Air Gun Clubs are restricted to Sub 12FP / Unlicensed Air Gun's

There a a Few Fire Arms Clubs that do allow them on Range

Also depending on you Fire Arms Team, they are normally restricted to certian
bit's of land for the First Year or so

Also not forgetting that Once a Fire Arm it can not be reduced back to a unlicensed Air Gun - General Rule

Normal rule is that you do have Land which is listed as suitable for a FAC High powered Air Gun

Usaully for Vermin control

Believe that BASC web site has information on their web site

I have a Section 1 Rapid 7, a 0.22 rimfire and two 12g shotguns.
A shotgun certificate is fairly straight forward to obtain, a section 1 is not.
With a section 1 you must prove you require a section 1 firearm, give the reason and it must fall within the home office guidelines i.e. quarry v's calibre and have full access to the land on which you will use it.
Everything you put on your application will be verified including road traffic offences from ten years ago or whatever, some of which depending on their severity would prevent section 1 ownership.
The land you expect to shoot on will be surveyed by the Police representative and his decision will dictate what firearm can be used. The Police will continue to survey any land you wish to shoot over for at least one renewal of the section 1.
This is because new certificates are issued as closed certificates with wording something like "....allowed to shoot on land suitable for firearms and approved by the Chief of Police.....". After usually several renewals the section 1 can be issued as an open certificate and the wording changes to "...land suitable for firearms...." or similar, my own section 1 is now open. The significance being on an open cert you can survey any new land you wish to shoot over.
Lastly once you have your certificate you had better stay the right side of the law, the Police have powers to revoke it if they think it is justified.
You know whilst typing this I have just remembered something you may find hard to believe but it's quite true. I was interviewed by the local beat bobby when I applied for my shotgun certificate this was maybe four or five years before I eventually obtained my section 1. He sat in our lounge asking me various questions one of which was - and I kid you not - "If we grant this you aren't going to go and shoot someone are you?" Part of me wanted to say well actually yes there's one or two people I have already lined up, obviously I didn't though. He then asked my wife the same question, "He isn't likely to shoot anyone is he?" she replied no. Difficult questions these. The punchline to this is two weeks after this "interview" the same Policeman topped himself !! The rumour was he had gambling debts and marriage problems. So much for the sanity issue.
Can anyone top that?

Few other points you will need to know.
You will need a cabinet to store it in.
If you intend to put a moderator on it you must apply for one on your application.
You will need to find two people willing to give you a reference. There is a form they need to fill in and send back to your FLO.
If you are only asking for a air rifle you don't have to list ammunition on your application.

If you are serious about applying your best bet is to ring your local FLO and have a chat with them.

The problem I see with FAC airguns, if you're doing pest control like me, is you then need to keep 2 guns with you all the time! :o FAC stuff would be totaly inpractical for indoor and confined space stuff, and even if you could turn the power up & down on just one gun it would affect zeroing. I'll stick with my HW95, it's working very well so far! :D Improve your stalking and you loose the need for an FAC gun. ;)

I have to admit I also cannot see the advantages of FAC Air. If you are going to use a sec 1 rifle you might as well get a rimfire.
The rifles are considerably cheaper to buy
Are much easier to sell on if you decide to change
Can be just as versatile you can buy rimfire cartridges that are only as powerful as a std 12 ft lbs air rifle on the other hand if you use H.V. stuff they can go 140 ft lbs plus

In an ideal world we would be able to stalk rabbits & squirrel etc. to none FAC airgun range - but we don't live in an ideal world - and we can't always do that.
For example a golf course is an artificially landscaped & maintained environment, prey can often exist in areas where in the wild it wouldn't. An isolated copse may hold rabbits but be surrounded by 200m of closely mown grass in all directions. If those rabbits are lamp shy or constraints are placed on shooting times, the odds are being stacked in favour of the rabbits. Multiply this scenario by 50 and you would have a tough job with a 12ft/lb weapon.
If the shoot has been cleared for airguns only, you should begin to see why an FAC rifle is preferable. It is nothing to do with an inability to stalk, it is merely a forced compromise, based on what the situation requires / what is desirable / what is allowed.
I accept if you shoot an FAC gun inside a building you will end up with a roof looking like a colander, but I don't have that problem (at the moment).

I know the situation in brittan about FAC guns, and I own a FAC gun, and a standard HW97 too, I also had (its broke now) .22 rimfire with a silencer.
Never missed the bloody thing since I'm an airgunner! Out of the question that I ever buy me one again, no way. Its so match more fun with airguns, shooting much smoother, accurater, relaxer.
and FAC airguns, wel I'v got a bsa fac...ok when you like the power, I like more to hit something, thats why I always take the HW on my trips.
