I think the reason ive never bothered is that were we do about 90% of our hunting, is about 30 miles away from were i live, and having to go backwards and forwards to check traps every 12 hours didnt appeal that much.
We have a few rabbits that are near my house so later in the year i will be setting a few. :)

To me snares are a bit "indiscriminate", what I mean is they can catch anything of a similar size to a Rabbit, once caught a farm cat as a kid with my mate Paul, it was still alive & vicious, we had the job of despatching it, not nice. Maybe we used it wrongly, I dunno?

My father-in-law was a gamekeeper and he was brilliant when it came to snaring. If you know what you are doing you can snare rabbits and foxes dead easy. When he was a kid he used to even set them for pheasants! Talk about poacher turned gamekeeper!
With rabbits you need to find the runs they use - obviously. The next thing is where do their feet go when they hop? Not as stupid as it sounds, if there is a bottom fence rail or a piece of wood they will jump at that point. Back feet on one side and front feet on the other. So you now know they will be in the air over the obstruction. So open the snare and peg it to be set at this point. Angle the loop so the rabbit arcs into it and the weight of the bunny will do the rest - Bingo!
Snares do need checking regularly and it pays to mark where you've set them, but don't make it too obvious, otherwise someone else will pinch your rabbits.

Snares help control 24 hours a day as long as you check them regularly and set them right.

We use snares for rabbits sometime's, in the open field , in holes, on their trails, under fences. when using snares around barn's and warehouses, the more chance you have for a cat. (or, like a friend of me, a dog!).
The most unwanted creature we ever had in a snare was a bunzing.

Snaring was a speciality of my grandfather (the old bunch, you no) they learned it during worldwar 2, becouse they where poor. And when the Germans made him prisoner of war, my dad and youngest brother took it over.
there was a lot of concurence in the field at night, and once my dad (who was 15 at that time) get shot with a 12g salt cartridge in his back! He was not able to sit for 10 days, but after that time he went on again, until he died 2 years ago.
And now he got 5 sons who took it over!

I once caught a cat in a snare - accidentally of course - and it was like a feline tornado - spinning, hissing, jumping and trying to claw anything which came close. The anchor point for the snare, which as it happened was a 2" wood screw into a rail, eventually gave way and the scrawny thing ran off.

Rattman what is a "bunzing" ??

photopro, a bunzing is netherlands for POLECAT! I was 16 years old and It was the first that I saw alive, and it was very angry to me. We run to the house, take a fell pup of 5 months, (so it could train a litlle at live quarry!), and entered it to the polecat (who was snared behind his back end). then it was a question of 5 minutes and the polecat was shaken to death.

As I said before snares work 24/7 and are handy for areas that you can't ferret or shoot , We had a few set last week and caught a few rabbits. During the summer going down to 4 strand brass snares are deadly for young rabbits.
