I currently use a umarex air magnum. It is .177 and for all intents and purposes is a good hunter if not slightly under powered at mid range (10.2lbs). From over 15 yards a head shot is a must. Problem is, the target (the head) is very small from any further range and a miss is very possible. I have bought an air arms tx200 .22 underlever which i believe is 12lb. My question is this: with the .22 should i still go for head shots or does the kill zone now include the breast (heart and lung)? PS..I don't eat pigeon (i don't know anybody that eats pigeon either), this is simply for vermin despatch purposes. I say this because breast meat is not taken for consumption. Cheers colin |

Hi Colin, with pigeons a headshot it sometimes has to be, ive been out shooting ferals this afternoon at the farm and was taking body shots at distance and the ones that never dropped dead managed to fly a good 200 yards across the grass fields before they fell, i always try to go for the head that been the reason i missed so many
:( and that was with the smaller ferals, woodpigeon are a lot bigger bird so go for the head (the buzz you get from a clean headshot is good!
;) ) And as for not eating them? dont tell me youve never tried them?..There really nice to eat (woodies that is not ferals), check out the recipes section and give it a go, Everyone i know who shoots these eats everyone they shoot They really are that nice! :) |

I always try to shoot Woody's in the head, sometimes miss
 Got one a few weeks ago, about 30yds, aimed for head, pellet hit shoulder next to wing. It swooped down, flew level for maybe 50 yds then crashed into the ground in a heap. It was dead on impact ^_^ Shot that with .22 Theo. Evolution. You dont eat Woody? theyre ok if you cook em right *good* |

to be honest mate you shouldnt really be hunting if you cannot hit a target of that size in the ranges that you will be hunting.im not having a pop just recomend praticing a little more untill you can get ten pence size groupings at the range you will be shooting (30 yards is probably a good distance).
;) regards jamie |

headshot/neckshots are a must on woodpigeons, its a waste of time going for a chest shot as most of the time it just bounces off, the feathers are over lapped and act as armor and if its full of the crop youve got no chance |

Pigeon is good quality meat in that it isn't particularly "gamey" and it certainly contains very little fat, a sort of a cross between turkey & pork in texture and colour. Don't bother trying to dress the whole bird it's only the breast worth bothering with. As for the kill zone, most of the time pigeons are stuffed full of food and this can act like an internal flack jacket, so it has to be a head shot. Incidentally we shoot wood pigeons to protect crops, not simply for the sport. (DEFRA directive) photopro |

With my BSA xl, I always try headshots when they are close by. From about 20m I shot them high in the back when I get the chance, with a heavy H&N silverpoint. they always drop instantly, and the breast stays clean. Magpie's and crows, always a silverpoint, no matter where I can hit them. On the rabbits yesterday, with the hw97k, using Gamo pro magnums, on 30m 4 headshots and dead in a second. I had to bring my son on other toughts today, becouse when he's coming from scool, first thing he do is look into the garden for prey, and take his gun! *jerk* |

Lets hope so! this morning before he went to scool, we both being hunting on a piece of waiste land far behind my garden. 11 rabbits, 6crows and a maggie! not bad for a windy morning. For a 15 year old boy, he's a very good shooter, he's having patience and can let a crow fly up when he thinks its not shootable.I like that attitude. |
