I was chatting to a guy today who is part of an estate team (country not housing !!) and he was appalled when I told him I was going to be shooting crows tomorrow morning. Why? You may ask - well he said I shouldn't even consider it when they are nesting. So my turn to be appalled. It's as if people think crows have a sense of fair play, your turn now it's my turn, I won't harm your young, if you don't harm mine. It's a load of hairy spheroids !! Crows are ruthless as are most of the corvid family, and it is utterly ridiculous to allow any of the major pest species (inc rats & rabbits) to breed before commencing hostilities. I have no problems with my conscience whatsoever in putting a 12g load through a sitting crow and eggs or young, and in my opinion you would be stupid not to given the chance. I have lined up two such nests and in a week or so they will receive the treatment. So now you know what sort of feelingless guy I am, give me your comments, my broad shoulders are braced. photopro |

:D Very suprised at his comments, Like them or not, Crows /Rooks are a very ruthless bird indeed and and cause mayhem to the smaller garden birds. Twice last year i saw rooks catch young starlings that had only just left the nest and fly off with them screaming in there beaks. I dont think anyone should feel guilty about shooting corvids at anytime of the year nesting or not. Get em shot!! *good* |

We bashed the crows again this morning, but their numbers were significantly down and not many presented a half decent shot. Dr.Spin was shooting with me (plus a third mate) and saved my blushes when I gave an easy crow both barrels and missed. I am now in the market for a cheap banjo and I will be looking for a docile cow which likes to stand still - very still !! photopro |

I never shoot a nesting bird. If i shoot now i will have 1 shot. If i let them grow up i will have maybe 5. Whe're hunting, whe are NOT at war. :D |

It depends on the shoot. If you are expected to control a pest species and the land owner wants to see results then you shoot. If you don't you are likely to lose the shooting, it really can be as clear cut as that. photopro |

Got no problem with people when they shoot crows or magie's on their nests, its all a matter of ethic's and the amount of corvid's who terrorise your garden/ field. I prefer to let them grow up, becouse they give sport another day :) |
