Recently got asked if we could thin out the rats at a farm were we usally shoot the woodpigeons, so went down tonight to check it out.
The area were the problem is, is in two large barns used to rear turkeys for the xmas period. there are about 6 turkeys left (dont know why) and there are signs of a rat infestation.
Lots of action whilst we were there, moving small straw bails and old machinery made the rats dart for the nearest rat holes, its about 9" thick with straw and turkey s**t and the ammonia smell isnt nice and there are rat burrows all over the floor.
We mainly visited to have a look around to see what we were dealing with and it certainly seems promising.
We will be calling again this week and taking 3 terriers with us and we intend to turn the straw over and smoke a few out also.
Seems like fun :D
Ill keep you posted and ill also take the camera for a few shot

i have similar permission and found that it was too much hassle to ferret it as the area was to large and the rats were in the barn walls so i just go of a night time with gun and lamp this is very effective as i have shot over a hundred rats in the last two months and the gamekeeper is well happy.

Same here, lots of holes in the brickwork and holes leading places that would proberly lead a ferret to danger.
Might have a go shooting at night, what light do you use Marko? would a red light be best?

Proberly not a good idea with having live turkeys wandering about, and theres no sport in poisoning them ;)
Were going sort out a day and go down and have a serious ratting session!

You will be able to lamp them at first but they will probably become very lamp shy. I understand NV scopes are cracking sport. A decent high vantage point is a must and I suppose a measure of nerve to sit there in complete darkness amongst what could be a job for the Pied Piper.

never put poison down you dont know apart from rats what will pick it up the lamp i use on my 410 is a deben tracer mini pro with dimmer switch cost about 118 quid not bad price a great bit of kit highly recommend it with red filter. if there are plenty of rats and they aint been lamped before just go once a wk for a few hrs on alternate days dont overdo it because as said above they will get lamp shy i have had no probs with this tactic and do well with it they are a lot hardier than bunnies and dont worry to much about lamp if you have red filter.

Yea meybe Taz, but its no fun poisoning them is it? im sure you'd agree thats its more fun flushing them out to a terrier than finding them dead all over! :)

hi neil i fi were you id definately go with the red filter to start with maybe leaving it about a week inbetween sessions as said because the rats will become weary of the lamp but if they still become aware then try changing the filter colour it colour or even setting a normal lamp up in their every night then theyd get used to it no matter how much you shot?oh and make sure you tuck yoru socks into your trousers and have your sleeves tight and also a scarf if possible those rats try and get in anywhere they can!lol

went ratting with my mate last night we managed 14 between us. me with my r7 joe with his air arms hc.it was the worst place ive shot the smell and the noise of the pigs.we didnt have to waite long for the action to begin.one appeared from the smallest hole in the wall .my mate got it right in the head .the others come and went in the next 4 hours.i think a springer was a bit noisy in a pig farm and scared others off for a bit.but they still come out again. jeff.morpeth

Hi Jeff
14 isn't a bad number, I bet there's a lot more. Were you shooting with the lights on? If so it would be interesting to NV scope them in darkness.
Pigs smell the worst of the lot and you will smell the same after being in there, thought for the day - they say smell is one third taste. ;)
Another bacon sandwich for Jeff......... *lol*

Once we where on a pig farm with 300 pigs. the owner had a rat problem, he find out that he lost 350 kg food a week! the pigs became a litle skinny, they where computer feeded, -fully automatic feeded rats!- and after we passed with the terriers and the smokers, we found almost 175 rats killed.
two weeks later- 150m further- we had again 100 ratties! fun!

This worries me, you lot throwing poison around, just reading the replies it is obvious to me that you do'nt know what you are doing! Why do I say this, because it's my job, I have been a Pest Controler (professional) for 9 years and some of the comments are frightening. quote, "put water down the holes with the poison" why? this will weaken the rodenticide that is on the bait..and could also contaminate the water course, this is illegal! used £90.00 of poison, need to clear up bodys, what about making sure that the job is finished and that these animals don't get a resistance through "under poisoning" failure to do this could lead to major problems in the future when the rats dont die but simply feed on the rodenticide. All rodenticides are for Rats and Mice, however different types are for different jobs, ALL animals are at risk from ALL rodenticides BUT there is (without going into too much detail) something called the LD50, this dictates how much (of anything) an animal needs to kill it, Rodenticide is aimed at rodents and the LD50 number reflects this. PIGS are a very high risk!
Most reported cases of rodenticide resistant Rats and Mice have been because of (with respect) amiture pest control measures, a lack of knowledge is a very dangerous thing.
I am not writing this to fall out with anyone but you realy should seek advise or leave it to the professionals when using these products. By the way, Farmers are on the whole crap at pest control too!
To also add that some cases of accidental poisoning of non target animals, and cases where kids have got hold of poison have lead to huge court cases, fines in excess of £40,000, prison terms of 6 months and so on.
Anyway, get yer guns out and leave the poison well alone for your own sakes...

Well said DM, never used poison's before not even for the couple of rats i once had in my garden.
1, Id rather trap/shoot them
2 Ive no experience in poisons at all and would never lay it down for fear of contaminating anything, im a hunter not a pest controller!
And i agree with what you say about some farmers not been too clever dealing with pest's, ive seen uncovered fenn traps in barns were chickens and turkeys and feral cats, roam free.
A disaster waiting to happen that could cause something serious distress
