I wonder how many forumites use a Larsen Trap? For those who aren't familiar with the hardware, it is a metal or wooden "cage" with a captive compartment for a decoy bird and two catching compartments for - well - catching! I have had a metal Larsen trap for about seven years and boy what a difference it makes to the local song birds. We used to have at least half a dozen magpies plus frequent crows in and around the garden. However over the last six years we have caught an average of seven magpies and two crows every year in the Larsen. We do still see the odd magpie but that's about it. In the last three years we have had Gold, Green & Bullfinches all nesting in the garden. Plus last year long-tailed tits also nested and managed to fledge their young. It is very satisfying when you have obviously tipped the so called "balance of nature" back towards a struggling species, I think the RSPB could do more in this direction. So how about setting a Larsen Trap in your back garden? Check out the link and even if you can't buy one how about making one? Oh and while you are at it how about putting up some bird nesting boxes? http://www.trapman.co.uk/metal-larsen-trap.htm photopro |

MH What am I going to catch 'em with if you've got the Larsen? You can take some dimensions and try you own version of it if you like. My brother-in-law has made loads over the years the tricky bit is the trap spring, high tensile fence straining wire works OK though. P.S. If it goes missing I'm straight round your place !! photopro Jamie is this where you say Oh that link !! |

Jamie Just for you two more links based on making a Larsen Trap. http://www.ew.govt.nz/enviroinfo/pests/ani...onstruction.htm http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/section...arsen-trap.html If you or anyone does have a go at putting one together you will get a great deal of satisfaction when you actually start catching. *good* You can even swear at the black & white b**t**ds before you smack them Jamie !! photopro |

yes seen these used a lot were i have permission, gamekeeper uses call birds to bring them he is very succesful shall we say, they definetely do the job.what he does is the roof has wooden slats in it that the crows magpies or whatever drop through after the carcasses or what have you and they cant get back out because the slats are in the middle and because of the height they have to fly upto it and with the wingspan cant get through. |

Hello Marko I think what you are describing is a letter box trap. As you say the prey can drop through the slot to get to the bait but not fly up and out. Letter box traps can be as big as a garden shed and catch tens of birds at a time. In fact after the first few they are attracted at a great rate of knots. When my father-in-law was a game keeper he used one to great effect, especially on crows. photopro |

I had no idea wich trap they meant, but now that I see it: I have a ROUND "larsen" trap for many years, with a cage for the callbird in the centre of it. Works good, but I prefere to shoot them :) Can be very usefull in no shooting areas. *good* |
