It was a very early start for photopro today with the alarm set for 3.30am, but it was shooting with Hawkeye day - and conditions were perfect. Hawkeye is a member of another local golf club and regularly shoots it, from a buggy - his company car. It was quite chilly when we started at about 4.30 and a certain person was taking the p*ss out of me for wearing gloves, however since I am a racing snake compared to the said certain person I needed them. Touring the course Hawkeye soon started locating rabbits which were presenting themselves at all sorts of ranges, we both had 0.22 rimfire rifles loaded with subsonic hollowpoints - ideal for this type of shooting. We took some terrific shots and the bunnies soon started to stack up. It was great being able to load them into a bag on the back of the buggy instead of carrying them, very convenient. There are quite a few woodies also on the course but they were very wary and kept their distance, it didn't stop us shooting two though. Half way through our bunny blitz we found a magpie grubbing about in a small stand of young trees. We approached as close as we dared and Hawkeye turned the buggy broadside I lifted the Ruger and gave the magpie a broadside - it was going no-where apart from in the bag. More rabbits followed some so close they were out of focus in the scope but most 60 to 80 yds out or more. It was now about 6.30am and golfers and ground staff were becoming evident. We had one last sweep of the furthest part of the course this revealed a pair of crows in a small silver birch tree. I am always amazed how unafraid crows are when you are in a vehicle and these were no exception. I levelled the rifle on the nearest and it crumpled without a sound. It's mate took off but despite our obvious presence wheeled round and was very fortunate not to receive the same treatment. We decided to call it a day and had a count up, our bag was 24 rabbits, 2 woodies, 1 magpie and 1 crow. A very nice morning's work and very enjoyable. I have played golf with Hawkeye in the past but this is the first time I have been shooting with him. He gave me most of the shooting and did all the chauffeuring, it was much appreciated, Hawkeye you're a gentleman !! *good* Hawkeye wasn't finish shooting though, this afternoon he is off crow bashing with a "secret weapon" which he wouldn't elaborate on. Hawkeye what are you up to ?? photopro |

Well after an enjoyable couple of hours driving photopro round i got home about 7.30am and loaded the motor up with my crow shooting gear, Set out and on the road by 7.45am planned to meet scaffy one of my shooting mates at the same place i shot on monday and tuesday ( with M H on the tuesday ). Just left home and set of on a 20 miles detour to pick a certain parcel up that should have been delivered yesterday and wasnt. "You have heard this before" mobile rings one of my regular farmers had a field of barley getting hit by crows could i come. Quick call to scaffy to give him directions to the new shoot finally met up with him at 9.00am. Got set up with decoys out and new secret weapon had a few shots then we decided to take it in as conditions were not right for it. We ended up with 10 crows by 12.00 they were hard to find, then got a call from monkey hanger "case of what was i doing" so i told him where i was. He was a few fields away from where i took him on tuesday he was shooting rabbits on one of his farms and said there was loads of black ones where we were as he had just driven past so up stakes and on the road. Got there and set up the bloody cattle would not leave us alone got 2 crows and a woodie. We decided to pack up and go to the farm and pot some ferals. we just stood near the buildings and shot ferals as they flew over good fun got 18 and another crow and by 5pm i could hardly keep my eyes open so we called it a day. Been shooting with 2 good lads today but ive hardly stopped since 3.45 am this morning and am completely knackered. Enjoyed your company Brian dispite what MH says you are not a bad shot for a lefty even though you wear gloves to keep your delicate hands warm you soft bugger. he will be telling you next i made him pick all the bunnies up when they were on his side (what else i was driving ) im not that daft for an oldun.(young really) PS The secret weapon is a ...................naw wait till ive really tried it next week hopefully if conditions are right *jerk* *jerk* *jerk* :P :P :P |
