10 oclock, My mate Dave calls to see if id like to come for a drive out to pick up some corn with him, and whilst were there, we could see if theres any woodies on the rape stubble that was only combined yesterday evening. Why not, i thought, its a bit warm, could be worth it for a few hours. So off we went. ![]() Arrived there about 10.45am drove up the headland, offloaded the gear and moved the shogun under the dense undergrowth, and went back to set out the decoys. Put about 40 deeks out in a horseshoe pattern and a couple of crow deeks out just in case, made the hide, sat back and waited. ![]() Very quiet, not a lot of action at all, there were a 20-30 pigeons further down the field, flying from treetop to treetop but not really coming down to feed, we knew this wasnt a great time to come and ideally we should have been their about 6 am, but here we are and were gonna make the best of it. After about 20 minutes waiting, one caught my eye, coming in quite high and looking down at the deeks and about to fly straight over us instead of coming down into the pattern, so gun raised, full loaded i gave it about 2ft lead and boom!, she starts plunging to earth, heading straight for me. I moved back quickly thinking it would land in my lap, but it hit the hide netting and was dead on arrival. ![]() Minutes later the group was heading our way coming in fairly low and heading for disaster (well thats what i thought  ) Dave slowly stood up and dropped one with his second shot, i took out a second with the first shot and watched it nosedive into the thick woodland, if only we'd taken the dog :( , i couldnt find it anywere, but im sure the foxes will (the pigeon that is, not the dog) And then it was quiet again for the next hour, shooting one feral on the wing and again watching it make a good quarter way down the field before crashing down to be picked up by car on the way off. And thats how it stayed, 3 woodies and a feral. But it was good to be out having a go at them, and i might go again on saturday 'early' and give it a better try! ![]()

Maybe a little movement from a glider or pigeon magnet would have enticed them. I have seen guys hit by driven shot pheasants and from that sort of height it would be a tad painful. You prefer a S/S for your pigeon shooting? photopro |

Thats exactly what we should of taken with us, but as we just planned to go for a few hours, we overlooked it  But the batterys on charge and on the next visit, the pigeon magnet goes too. And the dog! I wasnt too bad with the heat, the camo gear is the very thin advantage clothing and i just had shorts on underneath, and we sat as far under the trees as possible :D And that gun was a shitty Baikal s/s that i was just happening to be holding at the time of the photo, i had 2 shots with it and my shoulder still aches :( Id never own one of these, i was using my Rizzini o/u, not the best gun in the world, but a damn sight better than that one. ;) |

A BAIKAL !! I wouldn't have owned up to that , what possessed you to pose with it? A customer once lent me a crap Czech 12g I can't remember the name of it but it had an odd "sliding bean tin" mechanism to open the gun. I took it to my local clay shoot and shot everything I aimed at - so it just goes to show. A well made weapon it a much nicer thing to own though. photopro |
