The 31st of July brought not only the end of a very hot month but also the end of a VAT quarter. This prompted a very late night of frantic computer work to input a shed full of data before midnight. No I wasn't going to turn into a pumpkin, the system was about to enter the second VAT quarter and delay some VAT repayment for another three months. Sintilating stuff I hears you say and I agree but I wasn't bothered - I was crow shooting tomorrow with possibly the top crow shooter in our region, the ever so scathing Hawkeye. The weather literally looked like it was going to put a dampner on things by tossing down an hour before Hawkeye showed up. He was going to the quacks to verify whether he is human or not turns out he isn't - I could have told him that !! Anyway Arnold Crowminigger - "The Crowminator", phoned me just as I'd successfully sidelined all today's appointments and ten minutes later the crowmobile was on the drive. Hawkeye enthusiastically related the vast quantities of corvids he had seen the previous day and how we should have a good session. However things weren't looking too promising when we checked out a second shoot on the way and found only half a dozen crows. The owner was there to greet us when we reached today's lucky farm and it was quite obvious from what he said and what was evident that "the crows were back in town". We drove to a location about two fields away from the farm buildings and decided to shoot from two seperate hides, the idea being we would "bounce" the birds from one area to another and back. My hide was under an ash tree and against a blackthorn hedge, which gave excellent cover and a not too retrictive arc of fire. I set out a mix of pigeon shells and crow decoys and waited my heart pounding with absolute optomistic certainty. I waited only about three minutes and the CAW CAW of a carion crow had me poised ready to shoot. The huge black thief slowly flapped above my hide and as it started it's decent, feathering it's wings I gave it a 1oz load of No6 shot. It crumpled in a satisfying heap of black feathers. And so it continued, my most memorable bird being a crow I had seen almost three fields away which was drawn by the decoys straight towards me. I froze motionless in the hide knowing any movement would trigger evaisive action and a lost bird. It started to decend towards the decoys but at the last moment aborted the landing and detoured towards the top of the Ash tree I was under. I leapt forward the crow now over the tree's outer canopy and at the same time giving the bottom barrel the green light. The bird was no more than thirty feet away so the shot pattern would be very tight, however it folded in the air and with about as much aerodynamic finess as a frozen turkey thudded to the ground about five yards in front of the hide. My quarry tally was increasing but not at the rate Haweye's was, he was gleefully calling me on my moble evry ten minutes or so giving me an update on shot crows. On more than one occasion we were shooting with the phone in one hand and firing the 12g in the other !! B) Our crow visits were being interspersed by flocks of jackdaws - anything from six to forty birds strong. These cheeky "couldn't-give-a-sh1t" rampagers came bursting in like a gang of school kids on a newsagent theft spree. The first bunch caught me unawares and were on the ground amongst the decoys before I knew it. One particular flock took two hits and swooped past the hide within only a couple of yards of me. The weather as forcast changed for the worse and the rain it did cometh, my "bag" was up to thirty-eight and I wanted forty. The crows seemed to have got the message (funny that) and were now staying away in droves. A cock pheasant caught my attention on the extreme right and I watched as it entered the area of the decoys. Suddenly two crows came in over my head one on the left of the pattern and one on the right, I raised the gun and fired, the left bird dropped like a stone and I quickly had the second barrel on it's mate the bang was followed by a satisfying heap of crow, however Mr Pheasant was far too close for comfort and the plummeting crow missed him by only a few feet. He jumped up in fright and flew off with stories for Mrs Pheasant about it raining crows. The time was getting on for four o'clock and we were out of crows and both low on cartridges so we decided to call it a day. The final tally was 102 birds in just under three hours, with me hitting 44 and hawkeye 58. I shot probably 4 maybe 5 which dropped into neighouring fields after low escape flights and I haven't counted them, no doubt Hawkeye could say the same. So a cracking crow blitzing day, thanks Haweye that really was something to crow about !! *good* photopro |

Glad you enjoyed it mate i put some photo's up of the field i was shooting in and another pic of part of the farm. running total on this farm since June 422 black ones have bit the dust. Its just as photopro said we only counted the ones we picked up one's in other fields didnt count to the total. The field we backed onto was not one of ours so we could not go into it. It was great fun we were about 300 yds apart at the most. Took picture of mine the proffesional photographer didnt dont think he knows how. Photopro you just point the camera and press the button bit like shooting really you point and pull, them its bollocks missed it. ![]() ![]() View from my hide put it up once but will put it up again in right thread ![]() Photopro just spoke to you know who from the first farm she wasnt after my body at all there were crows there this morning. That really pissed me off

The jackdaws were like jap fighter pilots jinking every way and going like hell. Forgot to say in my last thread in the 58 i shot i had 4 tripples.     Now photopro want a 3 shot auto so he can do the same, He was been very sporting with the birds he kept fireing the first shot to frighten them away and then shooting them with the second. Dont really think he was meaning to do that its just he's a bad shot :P :P :P All i could here was BANG BANG i would ring him is that a double, i would ask no he said missed the ba**ard with the first shot. |

That makes almost 500 crows! You'r sitting on the right spot, this kinda shootings make's me a litlle jealous mate! Tommorow I'm invited for woody's, can I shoot my 12bore again, last time was in january, so there gonna be a couple missers at the start. Since the new law on hunting weapons here, cartridges almost hard to find, we have to use steel now, and all you can find is bismuth and lead. the gunshop ordered lots of them, but the factory can not deliver such huge amounts of cartridges at the moment, so we are waiting, and meanwhile we shoot the old one's, better for our barrels.
