Hunt Hard

This spring...the morning of the youth turkey hunting day.Newt poked me in the ribs at 4:15 am and said... Dad it's raining pretty hard, windy, and 35 degrees. Great I thought. We watched the weather channel radar....yup rain all day. Crawling back into bed seemed appealing...but turk hunting was calling us. It was so windy the night before, we didn't even try to roost one...so we were hunting blind. We started up the mountain and along the ridge they were roosting on all week before. Not a cluck...so over the top we go. We worked the oak forest they like to hang in...nothing. It's getting kinda raw out now. I offer Newt the options of heading home now while we are only a mile from home with an easy hike back...or hiking down to our turkey killin field a mile further....off we went for the struttin field....that's MY boy I thought. When we hit the edge of the field I could see 2 Jakes on the field. Newt dropped outta sight and set up to shoot while I belly crawled the decoy 20 yds into the field. I got right behind Newt and called softly...the Jakes turned away and moved off. Great I think.. Jeez I call better than that. Thats when I notice a big Gobbler out there....he run the Jakes off and answered me...no gobblin just clucks and puts. Bout that time a big raindrop hits the end of my wood striker ...thats the end of that one for today. As I pull the water proof carbon striker out and call just a little more aggressively and a hen comes in behind us puttin an a cluckin a mile a minute. Great I thought this is gonna be really good {if she helps us call him in} or really bad {if she busts us and gives the warning putts}. I keep calling...the gobbler trailed by the Jakes are coming...the hen is ten feet behind me and shuts up...uh ho. She hasn't seen us and the gobbler needs two more steps to clear the rise. I risk it and do a purr and he comes up over...I tell Newt, take him when you can....blam down he goes 40 yds. out. ![]() We new he was a nice one before we got to him. Turned out to be a double bearded Gobbler one 8 inch one 4 inch. Spurs 1 inch and 7/8 inch. He weighed in at 19 3/4 pounds. We had a great morning. ![]()

Hunt Hard

The next weekend {the first day of regular season} I got that 4:15 am poke in the ribs again that morning. This time gazing up through the bedroom window... it was a crystal clear, star filled sky...We were pumped. We headed out the same way as the weekend before, but when we hit the last ridge from the top we spooked a lone bird out...probably a gobbler. We headed south this time. After an hours slow walk calling lightly we only heard one Gobbler to far to get to. We worked along to the power line and two answered down low at the upper end of a big hay field. We got in as close as we dared {very dry and crunchy}. We couldn't see into the field but they were Gobblin close. I called to them and they answered me tit for tat. After about five minutes I coaxed one off the field and into the woods edge. He was a Jake and gobblin an struttin. Suddenly he shut up in mid gobble and folded up his strut. The woods exploded with a big birds gobble and almost immediately another Tom let loose. Two slammer gobblers had crossed the power line and into the woods 15 yards away. The way Me an Newt were sitting I could see them better. They stopped and gobbled up a storm, puffed ,strutted and even that{whoof} noise they make. We enjoyed the show immensely. I pointed out to Newt that the first bird had a longer beard but the second was bigger. Newt opted for bigger. ![]() That is a 21 pound, 9 inch beard, 1 1/4 " and 1" spurred ol Tom.

bodhi...you can man...if you really want to. photopro...I've seen your stuff...not to shabby. I came here to see what you blokes hunted. Hunting is my passion. rattman...turkeys are one tough bird....they see like a duck {3d and in color} and hear like a deer. You gotta shoot them in the head to kill them....a body hit will not take em down. We use 12 ga...err bore... 3 inch shell...loaded with 1 1\4 ounce of copper plated #4 or #5 shot. {I need some charts to convert all that to metric...lol} anyway they is tough birds. |

Hawkeye, you see that's the best part of being self appointed, you could self appoint yourself as my deputy, then if I befell a nasty accident while shooting crows and it couldn't be adequately proven that it was the guy I was shooting with - they Hey Presto you'll be top yarn spinner !! photopro |
