How far would you expect a .22 rimfire bullet to travel from a standing shot over flat ground?
Do you get "bone deflections" when shooting rabbits?
Can you get ammo that travels less distance or retains less energy, or is it all the same?

James, There are quite a few variables:

.22 LR (long rifle) ammunition is available in a very wide variety of specs, and a very wide price range. Bullet weights range from 30 to 60 grains (1.9 to 3.9 g), velocities from 350 to 1750 feet per second (110 to 530 m/s). Subsonic, High Velocity and Hyper Velocity. Most shooters in this country use subsonic since most sporting 0.22 rimfires are used to shoot rabbits at ranges up to about 125 yds but often significantly more.
As you would expect there is bullet drop which varies between different brands of bullet and very significantly between Subsonic and High Velocity. Subsonic bullets have a muzzle velocity of 330 m/s (1082 ft/s) or less, high velocity (standard) rounds have a slightly supersonic muzzle velocity of around 1125 ft/s(350 m/s) and a "normal" bullet weight of 2.5 to 2.6 grams (40 grains). Hyper velocity bullets can have a muzzle velocity of 450 to 550 m/s and this velocity is partially due to the light bullets they use.
Subsonic is held to be effective within 150 metres (490 ft) after 150 metres the ballistics of the round are such that the large "drop" will be difficult to compensate. The trajectory of the .22 LR has a 2.7 inch rise at 50 yards and 10.8 inch drop at 150 yards when zeroed at 100 yards. Practically speaking, a .22 LR rifle needs to be zeroed at about 75 yards to avoid over-shooting small animals like squirrels at intermediate distances.
Regarding bone deflection, I have never seen or heard of it when shooting rabbits, though I am sure it must be possible and certainly with bigger quarry. Rimfire 0.22 do ricochet a lot and will sometimes deflect off hard ground. The popularity of HMR 0.17 is in some part due to their frangible nature (and superbly flat trajectory) i.e. there disintegrate rather than ricochet.

In case you are interested:
Foot-pounds:
Multiply the projectile weight in pounds by the square of the muzzle velocity in feet per second (fps), then divide the result by 64. Note that there are 7,000 grains in a pound, so for bullet calculations you can enter the weight in grains then divide the resulting calculation by 7,000.

15.432 grains = 1 gram, 2.205 pounds = 1 kg and 3.281 feet = 1 metre.

Thanks for your help Photopro. Some very useful information there. *good*
I've always fancied a go with a rimfire, but I have to admit it frightens me to death where the bullet would end up if I missed what I was aiming at! :o From what you said it seems that load choice is the critical factor to not having a stray bullet a mile from where you're shooting  .
Thanks again ***goooodd****
