.17 and cleaning

Whats this that I hear with .17 and cleaning? clean the barrel every 10 to 12 shots! :o This is supposed to be due to the high velocity rounds, but come on, every 10 to 12 shots! I accept that you can carry a snake cleaner but it is a bit much... :(
Will stick with the .22 and never clean it! :D

Do you mean a HMR? Monkey Hanger (away with Hawkeye at the moment) would be a good one to ask about this. As for 0.22 rimmy, I have never cleaned the barrel on mine, Hawkeye will tell you how accurate it is - in the right hands of course !!

DM take no notice of these buggers that say you have to clean an HMR every 20 shots its rubbish.
Photopro thinks his ,22 is accurate and it is,
but you can ask Monkey Hanger what my HMR is like it is deadly accurate and gets one pull through with a snake boar every 100 or so shots if its lucky.

Im basically just a lazy sod when it comes to cleaning guns but if its not broke why fix it
it will group 4 shots (thats all the mag takes) at 100yds and you can cover them with a £1 coin.

DM let your gun tell you when it needs cleaning? I had been using my hmr for a while (marlin 917vs) was well pleased accurate as an accurate thing could be! then I got the "it needs cleaning regularly" ear bending, to which I cleaned my gun
it took about 30 shots for it to settle to the point that I was happy with? it has had about 500 through it since, and has just "gorn off" accuracy wise, so its been given the full bore foam, brush, and patch routine. hopefully this weekend I will put a few through to see if it gets back on song, yes the hmr DOES need cleaning more than a .22 rimmie but every 10? mine would never be any use to me if that was the case? hawkeye does NOT clean his and it is effective to say the least on long bunnies and crows so as he says if it aint broke dont fix it?
cheers MH

Thanks Guys, so what advantage do you have with the .17 HMR over the .22 RF? I know about the better distance over the .22, but then there is the "crack" I also know about the "safer" rounds.. So why would I want to buy one? What I meen is when do you choose to take the HMR over the .22?

heard all this cleaning lark, most if not all is crap. buy one scope it up, shoot it until is goes of. mine is around the 500 round mark.as which one to take out .22 or hmr, easy, hmr every time. why? have you tried stalking crows, weary rabbits 150 yds plus, cant think of a reason to keep the 22. ammos cheaper but the hmr has the wow factor. the only draw back with the hmr is anything you can see, you can shoot, it leaves nothing left for next time, ask hawk how many bunnies i have on1000,s of acres. but thats what the farmers want.if you where to clean every 10 or 20 shots you would never get the best out of it.i have done over 7 thousand rounds in 2 years with it.

ASE moderator they are the best for the HMR about £60 you can get away with a just a sling .

I have bipod for mine but it is hardly used as i shoot out of the motor most of the time.

just use a sand bag on the wing mirrow..

mind you i have a Anshutz and they are light guns...... -Fun1- ***wist*** ***wist*** **yahoo**

Thanks Hawkeye, I will see who sells the ASE mods, I do think that I would like a bipod though..As you dont use yours do you want to sell it, or I will send you a new sandbag as a swap! :D What size scope should I look for? the extra distance will mean that I should look for better magnification than the 9x that I have on the .22, or at least thats what I presume, should I look towards a 12x or more, or what? :(

by the way Hawkeye that would be "Mirror" then! :D

My FAC is "in the pipeline", and I'm torn between .22 and .17. I like the safety aspect of the .17, despite .22 being cheaper to buy and "run", the only issue for me other than cost is noise. I really need to see one in action to make a decision. I don't think I'll have to wait long to find out the way Andy is talking about getting a .17, I should have reached a decision before I have my FAC. :) I think it's probably most likely I will get the one that comes along first s/h at the right price when I have the money in my hand :D . (They will both do the job I want them for).

There is nothing wrong with 0.22LR and compared to a 12ft/lbs air rifle the trajectory is flat. Ammunition is easier to find and cheaper to buy.
HMR does become more attract though if your Chief Constable OK's it for foxes.
How about this if you can't decide?

The Sako Quad:

4 barrels. 4 calibers. All in one unique rimfire rifle. A new 4x4 category is born. We
put all Sako innovation, technology and craftsmanship to create a rifle concept that
would give you more variety and enjoyment than ever before. Choose one of four
ammo flavors to match your needs and moods. Change the matching Sako cold
hammer-forged precision barrel in seconds – without changing the impact point
thanks to the unique color coded Burris Quad 3-9x40 Scope that memorizes the
point of impact. Shoot. Then, change again. And again. And again. Fun!

17 Mach 2: A hot necked-down version of the popular 22 LR
22 LR: The universal caliber for target shooting and
close range small game hunting
17 HMR: A high velocity varmint cartridge with
excellent ballistics up to 150 yards
22 WMR: The most powerful of Sako Quad calibers.
A good small game and varmint cartridge.
Popular for over 40 years.

James, put the airgun fac on the license, along with a .17HMR, .22LR all with sound moderators.. It's better to have too much that not enough and put lots of ammo on too! *QQQ*

Well called into the gun shop today and ordered a CZ .17HMR with the ASE Moderator and Bipod.. The scope will be a 16x zoom jobbie from Ebay (about 40 quid rather than £200.00) :o

Thanks for your help guys! :D :)
