I suspect a semi auto three shot would be more use to you, plus you would learn to use it quicker as you would only be aiming one barrel. You could get a "pre-shot" gun for your budget and certainly some of the options at £700 would be new. If you are mainly rough shooting expensive woodwork would be a waste, and you would forever be worried about scratching it. This is why black & camo guns are becoming so popular. I would recommend you to look at the popular makes such as Benelli, Beretta, Browning, Remington & Winchester. However makes such as Fabarm and one or two others are well worth a look. If you do decide to go instead for a S/S or O/U there are numerous other makes to consider, but you would be better off going for a multi choke whatever you decide.

As this will be your first shotgun my suggestion would be to find the nearest clay ground to you that has a shop and try out as many different guns as you can.

Very true, its a shame you cant come over to Hull for a day, Our local clay shooting club has a massive selection of used shotguns and a fantastic ground to test them out on.
Or Win22 (Mark) im sure could sort you out with a good wepon.....he's too many and he needs the space :D

cheers guys,
theres a pretty big clay shoot about 20 minutes drive from my house that i will be going to soon,so ill have to see what they have for sale. but i was thinking more along the lines of a o/u as i will be using it for clay alot as i had great fun today lol but ill also be using it for everything else and the club i went to today which ill hopefully be joining has only 16 members and i think they would frown upon a semi auto. ive just been on www.outdoorsman.co.uk website (my local rfd) and they have the beretta white onyx for £1,113 which i dont thinks too bad and im now thinking i may trade in my bsa xl and also cp 88 to see if i could get it for nearer £800 as i enjoyed using this gun today. it seemed to fit me alright and wasnt too heavey nor too light but i want to try a few more before i was to buy anything anyway but i knwo beretta has a good name.

Dont rush into buying yet.
with that budget you can get a second hand gun for rough shooting and also a tidy one for clay shooting.
Let the lads know at the clay club ,and you will soon have offers coming in.

I've got a feeling there's going to be a "hardly used" Benelli up for sale on here pretty soon, but be careful, they're prone to jamming *aaaa* *aaaa* *aaaa* *aaaa* *aaaa* *aaaa* ***wist*** ***wist***

James take no notice of pro's gun its a bennelli not all auto's jam but got to admit the beretta is a good gun but i got rid of mine weight wise to heavy i like light guns so i got the fabarms auto,
that used to jam but soon figured it out it didnt like 65mm cartridges any longer ones no problem.
You have to clean them now and then though not like MH he never and i mean never cleans his beretta auto......... :o :o

By the term "new" do you mean new to you or brand new? as if brand new £700 will only get you into the bottom end of the market? however £700 for a second hand jobbie can get you into some decent kit, if I was in your position and knowing that which I have picked up, by shooting a LOT of different guns some in the region of quite a few grand,( benefits of being in a syndicate) my own game gun not being to shabby! I would go for a winchester 101 xtr multi choke 30" preferably, lovely well made reliable good handling guns, I had one and sold it biggest mistake I ever made?
cheers MH
