Squirrel Call; does it work?

Early this afternoon I discovered the golf course was closed due to being water logged. The first time this has happened in ages. So with only a few hours light remaining I quickly got some things together and scooted over. I thought I might get a shot at a long range crow or two so I took the 0.22 rimfire. I also wanted to try out a squirrel call which I bought recently, a "Faulks LS-85".
Parking near the greenkeeper's workshops I quickly got the gun sorted and heard several magpies calling. They have nested in conifers to the side of the buildings most years so I knew where they would be. I walked away from the car and saw a magpie high in a conifer chattering. Walking away from it I turned behind a well pruned Blackthorne, I rested the gun - getting painfully spiked - and the bullet flew before the magpie did. A loud ricochet sounded - bollocks have I missed?? The magpie swooped down in characteristic fashion behind the buildings. I walked round to have a look and was met by a chorus of magpies and crows the latter circling like vultures overhead. Something was up !!
I checked round but saw nothing, then two magpies jumped out of a nearby ditch, one flew off but not the second. I had hit it !! The bullet had entered somewhere near the right wing joint and exited back left taking a lot of magpie with it. By the time I had reached it, it was already dead. So I disposed of it out of the way and continued, feeling pleased at my early success.
The course has small mature copses of mix trees right across it, near the river the trees are more densely packed and you can usually see a squirrel or two, especially when you aren’t carrying a gun. I have never heard a squirrel call so it was with more than a little scepticism that I started “squirrel calling”. This involved “tapping” the call which has a rubber “bulb” – you don’t blow it. The noise is a bit like an out-of-breath terrier trying to bark. I hadn’t got a clue whether it sounded like a squirrel. These thoughts were going through my mind when, hang-on something is calling back – and it sounds the same! I was level with a sycamore sapling and looking up I saw a full grown squirrel clinging to the tree trunk looking down the tree, “barking” towards the intruder, his fore feet lifting as it to emphasize each call. I glanced at him and walked away. Let’s face it with a 0.22rimfire from 12ft I was hopelessly over gunned. I walked to a safer range, the squirrel now motionless, as he had obviously decided this was an “Oh sh1t” situation. I put the cross hairs on him and although he was still out of focus (so still pretty close) I knew I had hit him. I walked back to the tree, and in the dappled low sun I didn’t see anything, three seconds later gravity delivered him. I was well chuffed, I had called my first squirrel. I called two more and with the Rapid I would have taken them but the 0.22LR is prone to ricochets, and since the shots weren’t safe I didn’t shoot.
The light was starting to fade so I called it a day, but I’ll be calling in on the squirrels again in the coming weeks.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

The site I bought it from was the one I recommended a few weeks ago "Gun Accessories" in the USA, if you buy several items as I did, the savings are well worth the shipping cost. *good* You may find you can buy one in this country with a bit of searching.

This is the link:

The call I bought is the Deluxe Squirrel Call.
