Congratulations, welcome to the shotgun owners club. *cheers*

So we've got a real semi-on at the moment?
Don't buy the first gun you like the look of, take your time, it will pay off in the long run. *good*

*dance* Nice one Jamie, now its just a case of been super-sensible, and let the police know when your using it to shoot bird/animals, this just saves armed responce turning up to pester you, whilst your out enjoying yourself....aint that right James? *dielaugh*

If I ring them and explain that I will be doing a little poaching on the following farms/areas tonight are they ok with that??
Or is best not to tell them and risk the armed response turning up.

I remember a story from a few years ago one of the trappers from Humberside told me He was stopped one night while travailing to land he shot over when asked why he was out so late he explained that he was after a deer. The officer then asked if he could see his details rifle etc when the boot was opened and the gun removed from the slip he exclaimed with an air of knowledge looks ok to me "my mate has a shotgun just like that". (The guy was using a scoped.243) and bid him fair well.

PS
Good advice not to buy the first gun BUY THE FIRST DOZEN *aaaa* you can never have to many.

If you were shooting a section one weapon, you would have already had an inspection of the shooting ground if it was part of the grant. A shotgun does not require this, so as long as you have permission and the general public aren't going to be affected, then it isn't necessary. You might speak to any folks living within earshot and if you really want to do a belts & braces exercise speak to the Police control room the first time you shoot. However don't do this on a regular basis, unless you think the locals might call out the SWAT team.
I phone the Police when I'm shooting the golf courses due the the nearby housing, but not the private land such as the farms.

After what happened to me mate RING THEM EVERY TIME.
Don't worry about getting on their nerves, just get 'em told. As I've said in other posts, three minutes on the phone versus three hours in a cell? You choose.
I sometimes ring them three or four days a week, sometimes more than once a day if I have a location change. They will thank you for letting them know.

Same here, we always ring the police HQ before shooting anywere with the shotguns, the only time i never rang them....guess who turned up!, Mr Plod and he told me to ring before we go next time and we do just that, they do ask some daft questions like - "what do you call the field your shooting in?".....err.....Kevin?? but they always thank us for ringing them and ask you to call back when your leaving the land. But yesterday after reading that we (Humberside) have the worst police force in England, i just hope someone answers the phone :D
Dont be scared of bothering them, its our taxes and speeding fines that pay their wages and i want to see them work for it!

As a compromise and it's certainly good practise, you should carry a written copy of your permission with you when you shoot. If you did a survey you would find most shooters don't phone the Police, however it is understandable that a "brush" with plod usually prompts a phone call every time.
Speaking of a brush with plod, I regulary got the local ARV unit on my drive, 'cos the officer was mad keen on Harleys. The neighbours were starting to think I was a drug dealer !! He has moved off the ARV unit now thank God.
