It occurred to me that most of the Hunter World members do not have an FAC and maybe do not know the difference between a 0.22 rimfire bullet and a HMR 0.17 - so I have done a comparison.

A - HMR 0.17 complete with ballistic tip

B - Rimfire 0.22 copper coated with a hollow point

C - Bisley Magnum 0.22 pellet

Posted Image

Note the smaller projectile of the HMR yet by comparison, a vastly bigger casing and charge.
The 17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) ammo has a 17 gr. hollow point (filled with polycarbonate - the ballistic tip) boat tail bullet with a 0.172" diameter and delivers a muzzle velocity of about 2550 fps (depending on the barrel length).
The muzzle energy is 245 ft-lb and with a 1-10" twist, the bullet is spinning at 183,500 rpm. A typical 22 Long Rifle cartridge has a bullet weight of 40 gr. more than twice the mass of the 17 HMR. The Bisley Magnum pellet is 21.4 gr.

Very interesting Photopro, I see that you have a gained an interest in this beastie since having a go with Hawkeyes! So anyway what is the muzzle velocity of the .22 rimfire and comparison with a 12ft lbs air rifle?

Could you do us all a pro and cons of the different weapons? I am very impressed with my Rimmy (.22LR) and have just had my Logun uprated to FAC but as you know I am chomping at the bit about a .17HMR.

I am sure that others would benefit from your knowlege of such matters (James for one!) (me for another) and your help would be greatly appreciated! :)

By the way those HMR rounds look like a small lipstick! :D

The short answer to that I suppose is yes in that the quarry is the same but the HMR has a very flat trajectory. Interestingly Cleveland Police seem to be one of the few forces which have OK'd the HMR for foxes, most insist on 223 or 22-250 and the like. Colin of MAG (a recent new member) has some interesting stories along these lines, come on Colin get typing.

As most members should (will?) know, the legal maximum power for an unlicenced air rifle is 12 ft/lb, gives the approximate values as follows:-

A 0.22 pellet weighing 14.4 grains, maximum permissible speed is 612 ft/sec.
A 0.177 pellet weighing 7.9 grains, maximum permissible speed is 826 ft/sec

0.22 LR (long rifle) ammunition is available in a very wide variety of specs, and a very wide price range. Bullet weights range from 30 to 60 grains (1.9 to 3.9 g), velocities from 350 to 1750 feet per second (110 to 530 m/s).
Subsonic, High Velocity and Hyper Velocity. Most shooters in this country use subsonic since most sporting 0.22 rimfires are used to shoot rabbits at ranges up to about 125 yds but often significantly more.
As you would expect there is bullet drop which varies between different brands of bullet and very significantly between Subsonic and High Velocity. Subsonic bullets have a muzzle velocity of 330 m/s (1082 ft/s) or less, high velocity (standard) rounds have a slightly supersonic muzzle velocity of around 1125 ft/s(350 m/s) and a "normal" bullet weight of 2.5 to 2.6 grams (40 grains). Hyper velocity bullets can have a muzzle velocity of 450 to 550 m/s and this velocity is partially due to the light bullets they use.
Subsonic is held to be effective within 150 metres (490 ft) after 150 metres the ballistics of the round are such that the large "drop" will be difficult to compensate. The trajectory of the .22 LR has a 2.7 inch rise at 50 yards and 10.8 inch drop at 150 yards when zeroed at 100 yards.
Practically speaking, a .22 LR rifle needs to be zeroed at about 75 yards to avoid over-shooting small animals like squirrels at intermediate distances.

Watch the comparisons, some of the units are m/s others ft/s.

Rimfire 0.22 do ricochet a lot and will sometimes deflect off hard ground. The popularity of HMR 0.17 is in some part due to their frangible nature (and superbly flat trajectory) i.e. there disintegrate rather than ricochet.

[Re-cycled and tagged onto this thread from an earlier post - saved me typing it again.)

Very interesting information. I have to say I like the safety aspect of the .17, but I think the rounds are a little expensive. I also don't think I would be confident at taking a shot of 150yds or more. I had a shot with a .22lr a few weeks ago, and was very impressed. Having never used one before I was suprised that I could hit a penny at 65yds without any problem :o . Neddless to say, when I get my FAC I'll be putting .17 on just in case I try one and change my mind ;) .

How many guns do you have though Colin ? Not many of us could claim to own & shoot a 7.62mm calibre rifle - amongst numerous other things !!
Some of us have to scrape by with only two shotguns (well one at the moment) and two rifles. :(

COL, how the feck do you decide which one to take with you?
I know some are for specific jobs but you've got more choice than a gull looking for someone to crap on on the beach on a hot sunny day in Scarborough! B)
