I wouldn't usually travel as far as Scarborough to shoot foxes but when Danger Mouse ask the dynamic duo - me and Hawkeye - we couldn't really say no could we? The area was a golf course surrounded by houses and the homeowners were feeding the foxes so in theory they should be fairly tame. We travelled in my car (note: that's twice in a week) and made good time, about 90 minutes. We met up with DM at the golf course and parked the vehicles inside the perimeter fence behind a locked gate. We had taken Hawkeye’s HMR 17 and his new fox stopper, 223. I took my night vision sight and my recently returned Benelli, the latter when loaded with 54g “Howitzer shells” acting as a close quarters cripple stopper. We weren’t familiar with the course and really you should always view an area in daylight before shooting, however DM knew his way round so we were OK. Ideally we should have taken both the 17 and the 223 on our first walk round – I don’t want to say I told you so but……………… - anyway we didn’t, the 223 stayed in the car. The wind wasn’t doing us any favours blowing in the wrong direction and swirling. We walked to a safe point allowing us to shoot into a hollow and started calling, however nothing showed. We then walked up a long fairway calling and lamping as we went; it was DM who spotted the eyes first which were on the right hand of two parallel fairways. We stopped walking and I continued calling, we weren’t in the best of positions being up wind, but the fox was making its way closer and closer. In a small stand of trees about 150yds out the fox stopped, I suspect it had picked up our scent. If a certain person had taken the 223 a shot may have been possible anyway, we didn’t, it wasn’t and the said species foxed off. We decided to head back to the car and wait for 30 minutes before doing a second circuit. And that’s when we first saw him. DM or Hawkeye saw a torch beam over near the back of some houses, I said it was someone possibly looking for a cat. This continued for several minutes then disappeared. We started on our second sweep of the course and halfway saw another fox, this time we were the right way round given the wind direction. The fox however didn’t hang around very long and was soon gone. This was puzzling but we were about to unravel the mystery. Walking down to where we had seen the fox DM spotted a torch beam again, it was on the edge of the course several hundred yards away from the first sighting. We climbed a small hill and Torchie, now outside the course on a public footpath asked what we were doing. I was tempted to say baking a cake or something similar, but DM politely said “shooting” before I had chance. At this the half dozen or so active brain cells still resident in the village idiot’s head slowly got their act together and Torchie asked “What are you shooting there’s no rabbits you know?” But before the question was answered he said ”You aren’t allowed to shoot on here” DM replied” Yes that’s because we shoot on here” Torchie ”But you aren’t allowed to shoot on here” DM “We are the only ones allowed, it’s pest control and it’s what we do for a living” Torchie “But I’ve asked no one’s allowed to shoot on here” DM “True that’s because we are the only people allowed” Torchie “What are you shooting?” DM “Foxes” I chipped in “We are not shooting air guns” Torchie “Oh aren’t you, what are they” And so it went on. DM told him he could have easily been accidentally shot but he was more interested in the type of weapons they were !! It looked like it was going to be a long night, but not fox shooting. We decided to head back to the vehicles and not content with knackering our foxing, Torchie climbed back over the fence and walked back to the cars with us !! He very stupidly (well that’s village idiots for you) said he was going to contact the club the next day to get permission to shoot, “I was poaching last night, here’s my name, and I’ll be in when the Police arrive” We packed the gear away and took James up on an offer via DM to go round for a coffee. It wasn’t the most successful foxing session but it was nice to meet DM & James – and thanks for the coffee James !! *good* photopro |

I was dissapointed that I couldn't join you on the golf course
:( . It was nice to meet you both, and you are welcome to pop in any time
:D . For the record, I would've had the t*#t arrested. You can bet your life if it was me poaching the police would be there in 5 seconds  . We as a company do everything by the book, including visiting the police station so they know what is going on, and yet things still don't go as planned! I hope the poacher gets jail time *Freak* . |

Maybe I was but as has been said, he was a simple twat, and for the folks reading this, he realy, realy was Simple .. Now with people like that I think that sometimes a brush with the law may not always be the best thing  However this loony shouldn't be allowed a catapult let alone a bloody air rifle! :o |
