Sunshine and blue skies - in December? Get yourself out shooting the voice inside me kept saying and who was I to refuse? I gave the shy boy - Hawkeye - a ring to see if he wanted to join me but he was engaged in another of his pleasures, stuffing his face. *lol* Since he then had to go into town he declined the offer.
I had planned to shoot the adjoining field between the golf course and a nearby school, however the sprogs were going to use it (eventually they didn’t 'cos it rained -HB- ) so I planned to try a different area, close to the clubhouse.
The ground staff were working very close to the area I had decided to use so I changed tactics. I know the staff very well and they weren't bothered that I was "lurking with intent" nearby. I chatted to them as they felled some trees, the crows also used to the ground staff got closer and closer. My angle of fire was a little restricted but eventually a crow ventured into the "triangle of doom" and didn't venture back out !! The other crows got the message and effed off. I decide to do the same and went on squirrel walk-a-bout.
It's one thing shooting squirrels with a section one airgun quite another with a 12g. The plus with the 12g is that the squirrel doesn't have to be stationary, the down side is you have a real potential for serious tree damage. Squirrel number one presented no such problems and tried to run on the ground between copses, he was a good way off but the second shot stopped him. I walked back to the river where most of the bark stripping has occurred and a second tree rat was sitting on an over-hanging branch. As I approached it ran back towards the bank, instinctively I lifted the gun and fired - a cracking shot and the little sod didn't even twitch. I walked back to where I shot the first and to my amazement another was sat in a nearby tree. The angle was difficult on this one and it kept circling the tree to avoid me (I wonder why?) anyway I managed a shot as it was peeping round a branch, squealing it fell from the tree and disappeared into a thick bramble undergrowth. Things were going well.
I made my way to a copse in the centre of the course. By now the light was going and lines of crows were making their way to a roost in a nearby park. Although they were pretty high, in fact they were "you've got to be kidding" height, it was great fun whacking triples through the Benelli, the cartridges flying effortlessly through the mechanism.
I had also dropped the height of the stock using a supplied shim and it felt very comfortable. *Benelli*
Reaching the last copse I didn’t think I would see much, but there on a lower branch was yet another. I aimed slightly high on this one to take the shot pattern away from the branch. It worked and not only was the tree untouched but the squirrel dropped like a stone. One of the ground staff had asked me about eating squirrel, I said I hadn't tried it but that it was supposed to be OK. With this in mind I recovered two of my "victims" and rolled them in some turf the staff had left ready to work with tomorrow. They looked like they were tucked up in a sleeping-bag !! *lol* It pays to let the shoot owner / administrator see your successes occasionally, I just hope the foxes don't find them first !!
So one crow and four squirrels a very respectable haul I think you’ll agree. *good*

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
