Well, after a short rest of 12 to 15 years I decided to have another bash at Pigeon decoying, But let me diverse for a short while... I contacted a farmer via a bloke that I met on a job in Bridlington and he suggested that I gave this farmer a ring to see if he would let me go shooting on his land! This I did and he told me that he had 1 field that I could shoot, this field was at the back of the farm house and it had Rape in it! So I arranged to meet him this morning and upon doing so he quickly sussed me out over a chat and before I knew it he had given me about 600 acres to shoot with a promise of more to come, why more to come? well thats just his Rape and stubble! I can see this Farmer getting a bottle for Xmas! Anyway Digress over! I did as I was told and set up a hide in a hedgerow some 400 yards away from the house and almost at the end of the field, sun and wind at my back so I had a better view than the Woodies! Well I set the patern up in a "horse shoe" and settled down to see what happened... It is worth pointing out at this point that whilst setting up I hadn't seen a single pigeon! :( But to keep on the farmers good side I set up anyway. :) So there I was, on my own, dogless, no grub, no drink but a rucksack full of enthusiasm.. Then after about 5 minuits from behind me 3 pigeons swooped down onto the decoys, I lifted my gun and took the first bird out of the sky, swung round into one of the others and frightened it quite a bit, they flew off only to turn back in total panic and as I scrambled another cartridge into the bottom chamber one came over to my left, he crumpled as he felt the weight of my shot, a cloud of feathers fluttered away on the wind and this is when I realised just how useful a good dog can be! I trudged through the hawthorne hedge and over to where the bird had fallen, picked it up and added them both to the decoy patern! Several more followed and were added to their friends (both dead and plastic!) Then at a distance I saw something mooching about in the field, quite near the farm, couldn't make out what it was, maybe a big cock pheasant or a hare, long way off for a short sighted bloke but I must bring my bins next time!! Then someone at the farm walked into the edge of the field and this thing set off running, it was Hartley Hare, he came full pelt towards me, he made it to the decoys and halfway through I bowled him over! :) The Farmer had told me he was sick of Hares! I retreved the Hare and settled back inside the hide and as soon as I had done this a Crow came into range.. That got shot too! Morning turned into afternoon and the activity almost stopped, I was thinking of making a move but thought that I had better stick it out as it was my first time on this guys land.. I sat there quite bored for almost 2 hours without a single shot and then decided to have a little walk to where a pigeon had dropped earlier in the procedings, after all it needed collecting. As I scrambled through the thicket and into the adjoining field of winter Barley I spooked another Hare, BOOM! he's in the van too! So I continued to sit it out and another couple of woodies fell to the gun before I decided to call it a day (3:00pm) Bag count was as follows:- 11 Woodies, 1 Feral, 2 Crows and 2 Hares, 1 happy farmer and 1 happy Danger Mouse! This chap has 3 farms, he is happy, he hates Woodies, Rabbits, Hares and Crows, he doesn't shoot.. I do! :D He will get looked after! *good* Anyway I pick the puppy up in the morning so in about 9 months she can come and help, I will enjoy it more with a dog again! :) |

Well done DM and a nice piece of report writing too. I thought you were going to say you added the Hare to the decoys after you had retieved it ! You've got the right idea giving the farmer a single malt or whatever, you could have a very good setup for life there if you play your cards right. *good* photopro |

Thanks guys, wouldn't call that a good day though! COLD DAY, yes.. That wind was a lazy wind, didn't go round you, just cut straight through!
 Time tends to hase the memory but I seem to remember that 30+ was getting there, anything more was good, anything less was either OK or poor, 11 woodies is as I remember poor! Isn't it? |
