So after getting in about 1:30am from fishing, it was time for 5 hours shuteye before we were heading out to decoy "A few" crows and rooks that were playing havoc in a crop of maize. We arrived in darkness about 6:30am and set about making the hide before the crows started leaving the nearby wood that they were all roosting in. The crop was only cover crop for the game birds, but this was attracting the birds to feed on a freshly drilled field that bordered the maize field and Mr Farmer wasnt happy. Well as the daylight started breaking through we could see the rooks leaving the wood, and estimated there were about 1000 of them, they covered the tops of the trees in what was a very big wood. They started heading in as the soon as the sun was out, only in small groups- but they were coming! Two shots, two dead rooks and this is when we really noticed the ammount of birds that the wood was holding, when the shots went of, the birds soon started heading off. Trouble with this is that there are a few of these maize fields around this woodland so if they were not to feed of the one we were shooting on, they could soon find more food elsewere. We stuck at it for about 4 hours dropping about 20 crows/rooks into the middle of the maize field, this was going to be fun trying to find these :( , very thick and quite tall crops towards the middle, but we had to get in there and retrieve as many as we could. ![]() A view from the hide, we had a few rook decoys out and a remote controlled wood pigeon flapper just in case. ![]() The maize field and part of the woodland in the background were they all roosted. ![]() Mr Camoflauge! or Mr Baikal as i like to call him. *hunter+crow* This is Dave, he's got about about as much permission on land around here as Hawkeye has in the North east! :D He also doubles up as a gundog :D I went around the edges and picked up 4 rooks before heading into the thick crop were i found another 11 or so. There were still a few more hidden in the crop but we left them as fox food. ![]() ![]() So we retrieved about 18 of the 20 odd that we shot and were heading of the field just as the landowner drove past and stopped for a chat. This guy was really happy with the ammount that we had and bagged them up and took them all with him to hang out on stakes to frighten them off some other fields. He also offered us about another 100 acre to shoot on next time and said he would bring us some cartridges next time we come. Thats a first!! :D |

Hawkeye's bad enough but I would have to draw the line at shooting with someone using a Baikal !! A magnet might have drawn them in for you, did you use any calling system ? Always bearing in mind we photograph them first if we use an electronic device !! What you need is an efficient flapper or two, one which will even work on a pole........ A farmer supplying you with cartridges ? photopro |

Take note of the pro's post :- Always bearing in mind we photograph them first if we use an electronic device !! Thats the only reason i take him as he's supposed to be a proffesional photographer, mind you i hope his pics are better than his shooting cos thats crap.. :P :P :P :P Dont know what type of foxes you have Neil but the ones we have round here will not touch crows..

I never noticed when you visited, but if Mikes feet are in proportion to his hands, he'll be about size 34 in boots!!!!
