Any shotgun will do but generally i would prefere a semi for the rabbiting and wild fowl just so you can have the choice of an extra cartridge up the spout for when needed, also this is fine for clay pigeon shooting but some clubs may want you to have a safety flag to show the guns empty. but shooting game with a semi may be frowned upon slightly by the older generation that all turn up in their tweeds. Id either go for an OU or Semi though.hope thats of some help |

Best thing is to get to a clay shooting ground and try a few different types of gun out. And if its only rough shooting and the occasional clay shoot - One gun should suit all your needs. One of my first guns was the Remmington 1187, This was perfect for clays, pigeons, rabbits and wildfowling. Theres no reason to get 2 or 3 different guns for 2 or 3 different types of shooting. *good* |

Get just one gun that fits well and feels good to use and you'll be fine. |

I think you will find most people will be happy with 1 gun be it side/side, o/u or semi. but you will find your own way. I started with a s/s 3" mag 12 gauge which will do just about anything you want it to do 28gm no.6 for Rabbits/Pigeons and other small game upto 42gm Mammoth magnum bb's for geese/wildfowling. THe gun was a bit heavy but I am a big lad so it didnt bother me, I have since owned a few shotguns and have found my ideal setup is a 20 bore o/u with multi choke for most small game and clays & a 3 1/2 12gauge mag semi auto for the bigger stuff & Wildfowling. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with using 24 or 28 gram cartridges through the semi on the clay ranges or rough shooting but it has a 30" barrel so its a bit on the long size for standard game & clays. the best thing you can do its like said before try if you can but its buy it and try it you should get a good feel for the gun just by bringing it upto your shoulder in mock firing but after a few times out you will know, You will always be able to trade the gun in for a better/more expensive one when you want to better your self if you use the same gun dealer. My best advice i can give as an improving novice is dont stress too much on the gun, get a safe gun that feels nice to hold and go and enjoy yourself. *hunter+crow* best of luck. Rich

The most important thing when choosing a gun it getting one that fits nice and comfortably. You don't have to spend loads, and the more you spend the more upset you will be when you scratch it (and you will). I've recently picked up a very nice Browning Silver semi-auto for under £300 in VGC and perfect for me. Best of luck with your choice. |
