Hi,

Has anyone got a set of insturctions on how to build a larsen trap(to hold 1 call bird an 1 or 2 others)? Dont fancy buying one and ive got a load of spare wood lying around. Diagrams/measurements would be great.

Thanks

I do have some experience in building a Larsen trap although the one I use is fabricated from galvanised mesh. My brother-in-law has built quite a number from timber - with some assistance from me. I will see if I can sort some dimensions etc soon.

That's OK and will certainly work. I would make some slight changes though. The sliding door in the captive side isn't required a simple mesh panel which is hinged is quite sufficient and allows better access. The threaded rod is also a bit elaborate you can pivot the door on two 5" or 6" nails or a length of sheep fence straining wire if you like and the spring can also be successfully made from the same wire. The split perch which is the key to the Larsen should be of the same material as the body of the trap, in the article the dowel is more that a tad bright and would be prone to tripping with any slight movement of the trap. Don't forget crows and magpies usually land on the top of the trap first before trying to hop onto the split perch, you don't want them to spring the door too early.

Y'know, I reckon I could build and sell them :D

With my woodworking skills, I might even be able to make flat pack ones - and
get IKEA to sell them for me *aaaa*
