Called the Golf Club tonight to let them know ill be on the course tonight - Just for a look around. Shortly after - The Chairman of Greens called me back to say he'd meet up with me and show me around and let me know were the "Hot Spot's" are. This is the course that Photopro got me the permission on (He's a top fella!) :D So anyhow - Had a good little chat with the chairman and off I went to check out my new surroundings. Rabbits everywere! Lots of Gorse bushes, too thick to ferret but with the ammount of bunnies sat out on the course, shooting them would be easier and more fun. I could get within 15yds of the rabbits, they just didnt seem too bothered with me and just sat there chewing the grass. If i'd taken the airgun - I'd have bagged dozens of them, If I had a Rimfire - Id still be there now, There really were that many. I gotta get my Sec 1 granted, Its a must have weapon on this course! |

Absolutely true !! [Neil this is you buying me a pint]Make sure you have a game dealer sorted and ready, you could bag some serious numbers on your first few visits. Did you ask if the Chef wanted to use any? If I remember correctly their catering is contracted in and there was some talk about it changing, a new bunch of pan rattlers might be interested. I would give the job 3 or 4 months and then suggest the rabbits were getting a bit wise to your shooting requiring a longer range shot. Then say you have applied for a section one, reassuring them that the local plod would confirm the suitability of the land before it is granted. If you let me know when you do this I will talk to the secretary with a well timed but apparently unprompted phone call. photopro (HW Negotiator) |

Thats correct - The catering contract is about to change hands which might be better for the club as the current owners wouldnt know what to do with a rabbit

To be honest, As much as I admire rifles, Im not really interested in owning one. I would apply for one if this new permission goes to plan. And with all you lot who would happily join me on a shoot - and all have Rimmys What the point?

As folks have said you will be amazed when you start shooting on a regular basis with a rimfire. You are stepping up into a different league and although the air rifles have their place you will choose the rimfire every time. A 0.22 rimfire is cheap to buy and peanuts for ammo plus with a decent moderator very quiet - Hawkeye's particularly so - unlike him !! photopro |

Met up with DM on friday and we ventured down to this course to see if there might be any sat out after the recent floods. The course had suffered badly from the rain, totally water-logged. But we had a walk around and shot 5. DM was on fine form with the 177HMR, Taking rabbits out at a good 150yds, Very impressive shooting. I finally realised just how good these HMR's are - One of the rabbits he shot was layed there with not even a mark on it, I picked it up to find that the bullet had very kindly gutted it for us - on the other side was a gaping 3" hole and and a very smug looking "Mouse"
:D As the daylight left us the mist came in off the sea making things harder for us to see anything. The light off the lamps was too bright for the fog so we headed off back to the cars. Still enjoyed it though, Just watching DM pick these off was good enough for me. Ive some pics in the camera - Just looking for the damn camera lead to upload them - I bet the dogs hidden it somewere in the garden  Ill have them up once I find it! |

It was a good night and like Neil said was only spoiled by the fact that the sea mist came in and the fact that the course was more like the neighbouring Hornsea Mere! Anyway, Neil had a go with the .22 rimmy and took a rabbit at about 65 yds, lets see you do that with your Shotty or the 12ft lbs air rifle! The other Neil (Foxy) also took one at a simular distance, (maybe 75 yds.) Now the .17 HMR does sort em out and the noise did'nt seem to spook em much, The head shot that I took was the best shot but these guns are the business for this type of work, Neil, have you made a decision yet? :D Thanks for the invite, and any time again! *good* |

The weather as always is the key to a good day or a no show. The rabbits are still there and you will have some cracking days at them, without any doubt. I agree with James - as you know - about getting the Section 1 form BUT since the new shooting is to form the basis of the application and since the golf club WILL be contacted it would be more than prudent to delay the application. It takes time to form friendship bridges but a very short time to break them. photopro (sounding like my grandad !!) |

After speaking to Win22 (Mark) tonight - And also coming away from his with another shotgun (You cant visit him and walk away empty handed) We were talking about joining the Bridlington rifle club and getting an FAC. In the time that all this took to go through - The golf club should know me better and hopefully feel happy with me using one of these on the course. There's no rush. especially when DM only lives down the road!

You will need to specify a requirement for expanding ammunition if you are going to buy ammo for pest control. A target granted FAC will probably not have it listed. photopro |

I ran through most of the details with Neil regarding FAC application, Variations ,moderators, ammunition target/vermin, etc. Six months club probation should be long enough for him to show the golf club what a wonderful job he is doing. He should be able to apply for his license using his membership and vermin control. Once he has his ticket he can keep his club membership purely as a back-up or if they get the 100yd range up and running zeroing etc. |

I just got another 150 acres of shooting permisson today! As if that's not enough - it is on the boundaries of the farm that I already have permission to use (where I've been going with Sutty); so I already have a bit of an idea about flight lines etc. 300 acres within a 15 minute walk from my house, nice! Loads of laid barley at the moment as well. :) :) |

Just been for a walk today, around the field Sutty and me shoot....... what a disaster, farmers crop(borage) 99% destroyed by flooding. Beans in next fields are not too bad though, and the woodies are still using the same flight lines and landing to feed on the new weeds. Cheked some of my new permission........ Sutty get some ammo! Loads and loads and loads of laid barley! Bit wet underfoot in places..... ie nearly ankle deep, but there are dry spots, and sme good spots for a hide; on top of that, the pigeons line up on some telegraph wires readying themselves to divebomd the field! Sutty, I've got you some new off-road parking, close to the new shoot. Mike, I depend on Sutty for a gun, and to get the ammo, but if he doesn't mind showing you up, you can come along next time if you want *good* |

I've just got in, I went down to the course for a couple of hours tonight to combine some shooting with a bit of dog training. Took the airgun and sat around near this little wooden hut surrounded by tree's and waited for the rooks that were covering the tree tops against the main road. I saw one land and I managed to creep quite close and laid down and took a well aimed shot - and down this little Jackdaw went. I could have had a couple more but the dog spooked them :( . In a way I was regreting bringing the dog but I felt she needed this experience, because further up the course I could see "Ton-dreds" of Rabbs sat out in the light rain (It ALWAYS starts to rain every time I visit this course  ) Managed to drop a couple of woodies that landed above me, the dog marked these well. Further up the course I was stalking the rabbits, trying to be as quiet as I could but at the same time control one "Lead pulling Spaniel" I saw one half grown rabbit stood upon its back legs with its head held high in the air - The perfect shot, I dropped the dog lead and stood on it whilst I lined the rabbit up. THUD!! the rabbit fell from the well aimed head shot. Another rabbit only around the back of the same headgerow also fell victim to the HW90. Then it was a bit of walking before I managed to get within a suitable distance of the next rabbit, this time the rabbit was facing away from me chewing the grass, I aimed for the back of its head at about 25yds and fired. The shot missed the head and struck the rabbit on its back and soon made a slow run for it into the gorse bushes. So I slipped the lead of the dog and ran across to the bushes and the dog was soon on the scent. She smashed her way into the middle of the gorse bushes and managed to pin the rabbit down but couldnt seem to pull it out the thick undergrowth. So I waded in and managed to grab the rabbit and quickly despatch it. I was well happy! The dog was happy and as the daylight fell, I made it back to the car, Hiding the rabbits around the bushes, allowing the dog to track the scent down and retrieve the rabbs. She worked very well and never missed a single one. And she's only 5 months old. But I could have managed a few more if I hadnt had her there, as she did frighten a few off, There's me in full camo gear -with a bright white dog! :D But a good couple of hours well spent! |
