Neil, just show her some mud next time, then she won't be showing up like a
halogen lamp - or even an advert for DAZ©

Went back to the golf course tonight, me and my mate Neil walked around for a couple of hours armed with only the HW90 and a pocket full of superdomes.
I always said that after a nice sunny day this course would be alive with rabbits and I wasnt wrong. I arrived at the course about 8:00pm only to find about 6 golfers still playing and just as they started to get further away, a car pulls into the car park and this old guy said "Are you shooting? Im just going to do a few holes, Ill be done in an hour" -HB-
Well as these guys pay good money to play, I smiled and said "Not a problem Sir, take all the time you need" -( Through gritted teeth) :D and we went for a drive around to waste some time. At 9.00pm the guy had finished his game, wished us good luck and off he went, so we set about the rabbits. After 2 hours we'd managed to get 6 rabbits, 2 fully grown bucks and 4 half grown youngsters, all clean headshots. Its good fun with the airgun, crawling around on all fours trying to creep up on an unsuspecting rabbit, If only we'd had a Rimmy we'd have had dozens of bunnies.

DM, James - Get in touch and lets have a night here with the rimmys, you wont be disapointed! :D

If they are happy for you to shoot during daylight hours be very careful it will only take a handful of members to call an EGM to stop you shooting - if they feel that way inclined. I tend to shoot when the courses is closed or at night, most members don't even know the shooting is taking place. If you do shoot rimmy I really would only shoot it at night - as I'm sure you would anyway.

Neil,

I've just read your account of your rabbiting session, now I'm no expert but your account was very very scary :o . I'm afraid to say you are going the right way about ruining that dog. Slipping a five month old dog on a running wounded rabbit, please, please, please don't do that. You are going to have the spaniel for many years yet, do not be in a rush to get it out into the field. Most trainers do not start their field work until at the very least a year old, more normally 18 months. Just concentrate on heal, sit and stay with the occasional bit of dummy work. Again please please please do not take the dog any where near wild game yet.

Thanks for the concern and warning Richard, and having been through training a pup for gun/ retrieveing work before, what you say all makes perfect sense. The idea of taking the dog to the course in the first place is to get away to new ground and run through some training commands that are starting to work well, although rabbits are running around certain parts of the course, there are quiet areas that offer little distraction to the training programme and 30 minutes of sit/stay recall to the whistle follwed by some hidden dummy retrieving worked well, The shooting started after this and this wasnt meant in any way to be part of her training. But retrieving the wounded rabbit - saved the animal of any further distress as I wouldnt be able to have found it without her. She comes across rabbits almost every day whilst out walking so the experience wasnt that much of a new thing. But although I will admit to encouraging her to find hidden rabbits in the bushes - its not a method I would use normally with such a young dog and this is the only time that she has done this. Im aware that making a dog retrieve fur or feather at such a young age can ruin them, but I found that sometimes you can just tell with your own dog when their ready to move up a level and although Im not planning on moving up that far - I felt that this little experience certainly did her good.
And the basic commands continue! :D
