A major event took place today - the World Pea-Shooter Championships. Competitors from all over the globe - about 200 of them - decended on a sleepy little village close to Eley in Cambridgeshire. They had the BSP - that's the British Standard Pea-Shooter of 12" catagory and the free style, which for the first time this year included pea-shooters fitted with laser sights. Competitors stood 12ft from a dart-board covered with putty and scoring took place as in darts. Although called pea-shooters they actual shoot Maple seeds, a high protien pigeon food. The key to success being the ability to choose the exact calibre of seed - well you wouldn't want one stuck up your pipe would you? Two referees decide the point of inpact with competitors needing to estimate windage as the competition is held out doors. The championships have run for quite a number of years and are the brain child of a local teacher who got the idea after confisgating pea-shooters from two of his pupils. photopro |
