Working on a grotty pen last evening with the sound of the keeper zeroing up his .222 for a night out in the next field, felt a bit niffed so decided to stop work and have a walk around looking for bunnies. Took the auto and a rimmy inverted on my shoulder, took a couple of mixxy bunnies with the rimmy and then a squirrel high in a beech tree with the auto, followed by a long uneventfull dusk walk. With the truck in sight, felt it was all a bit of a waste of time, but then out of the hedge 40m away comes a charlie and just sat there, went to fire the auto but the safety was still on - fox starts to run, so pumped 3 rnds of 6 shot into it, slowed it down - changed to the B/A rimmy - no rnd in - loaded and emptied 3 rnds into it @ 60m before it could make it into a flock of sheep. Ran across the field loading the auto with BB this time but it was down, so just put 2 rnds from the rimmy upstairs to put the lights out. What excitement and a rush of action all over is seconds - enjoyed phoning up the keeper, to tell him," you might as well go to bed mate - job done". Got home a bit late - my cocker pup started to sniff my right hand, after carring the charlie, "must have been the bunnie" I told my wife, he could make a good dog. ![]() I used alot of shots as the keeper was on a high chair once and put a .308 into a fox - down it went, but after shooting a couple of deer the fox got up and ran away. |

Hi Grasshopper - I always carry x4 BB but I admit I was caught unawares, no Blackbird sounds etc and the rimmy unloaded ready to go home. Up to last year the previous keeper only allowed me to use air rifles for vermin - so if a fox came out of the hedge all I could do was wish it 'good evening' which often happened. I often carry two guns but I'm very careful with safety and have never used both together before - the auto brought it to a stop - then x3 rimmys into the boileroom. The new keeper is a good lad, he told me to buy what ever guns I like and suggested to my wife she buys me a .222 for xmas, she said," my xmas presents are getting earlier every year - soon they will overlap". |

It's sods law, whatever gun you decide to carry with whatever ammunition it will be wrong for the quarry which has just jumped out of the bushes in front of you. !! photopro |

Well done HB, you will remember that first one for the rest of your life, by the time your 90 those rimmy shots would have been millimeter perfect at 200 yards mate!

Cheers lads - it was a bit heavy, more like a ganster movie. Went back two days later, just tooling up by the truckand the biggest dog fox appeared where I lift the vixen - turned around to pick up the gun and it was gone, took it out on a pigeon and a squirrel. |

If I carry the .410 I am guaranteed to see a fox,but when I carry the 12 bore with 4 BB shells in the belt the sightings are a lot less frequent, the law of sod! Billy

Hi Billy - Yep had it myself a while ago, carring a .410 and came face to face with a fox - let it go. Plus the other one is if say a bunny comes up - do you take it and risk distrubing a fox, and end up with nothing. Carried both the rimmy and auto this morning and took a Maggie, bunny, x3 squirrels and a woody - nice walk. |
