Just fancied the idea of fitting a scope to a shotty. I have a spare WTC 1.5 - 5 so brought a special B-square mount to fit it to my Win X2 12g. ( it also fits a Browing gold). to fit just tap out x2 pins and fit - simple. Checked the zero and went off to the woods - its 'brill' took 12 squirrels 3 pigeon and a bunnyin 2 hrs. Next day my son gave it a go, 5 more squirrels - as he said," its like an acarade game". At first we were too carefull as a rifle, then remembered its a shotty = near enough, is a kill. Being a good little scope its good in lo-light and quick to lock on. Haven't tried it on flying targets yet. Anybody else tried out a shotty with a scope? |

Will try and get some photos of my gun, its great to use. I sent my son into a woods and to save being upset in case he didn't get on with it, just said," shoot something for the dogs dinner". I went into another wood with the dog and moderated shotty. Sent him a text," any luck?" go the reply," breakfast -lunch-dinner-supper-breakfast!" ( I only got one). Fancy giving to the lad for 'beaters day' complete with red check shirt, baseball cap etc. I now have an idea for using it in a turn & tilt office chair in a hide for pigeon shooting

It's my belief that many are shooting 'slugs' I batch test my carts and quite a few fail - lead clumping on the wad with a few outers to form a limited pattern. I just use them up in very remote areas - if I take them back they may be resold again. I gave my son some left over carts from the shoot to test the s/auto and with one shot, blew a squirrel out of a tree and took the branch off - bit of a worry when beating. As far as I know they will have a x4 range - will empty whats left into a stump. |

Most people who use scopes on SG use them for big game with solid slugs. Anything less than a solid on Boar is normally not considered even though the SSG is like a clump of .38cal balls you won't be albe to hit dead centre of where your aiming at longer ranges. Also when shooting Large game this will no doubt damage good meat. Really when your using shot of any size there is no need to use a scope it can also hinder you when you when you want to aquire your target in a hurry |

An old gamekeeper technique was to pour melted candle wax into a 12g cartridge to hold the shot in a solid lump. The admin of Hunter World would never - of course - endorse this practise, I just thought you might be interested. photopro |

Any when it gets dark light the end of the barrels as there will be a nice amount of accumulated wax on them LG |

I found that slugs have a darn good range........ and accuracy.. depends on whos shooting it.... and how much powder etc... but there was a story not long back ... where someone shot a deer... but didnt realise that a house was about 300 yards away.. it went into one side of the house and lodged itself in the far wall..... luckly the person wasnt in that room at the time..... he was arrested.... and needless to say it was in america.. |

Hey Jonrms we have our own UK home brewed nutters, our last keeper , mad sod used to zero his 25-06 on an old oil drum but there was a cottage across the next field - part of the reason I bought my son a red shirt. We always tried to be on a reverse slop to where he was creeping around. Just been out again with the scoped shotty x2 rooks, x2 magpies, x4 squirrels, its just good to use - a few years ago nobody put a scope on an air rifle. |

You make a very good point.. at one time or another... probably in the usa where my gun came from.. someone drilled some holes ontop of the rail for a scope... they are in perfect alligment with a scope... I dont think at this point in time I will put a scope on my shotgun... but I like your thinking.... |

I wouldn't drill a shotty to mount a scope - I had a good suitable spare scope with a small diameter front lens so all I had to do was buy a bolt on bracket. Most of my shooting at present is Squirrels in the woods - nearly 400 this year, + other vermin say 700 in total, in that situation its great on say x2. Its not the normal slow scope sighting technique - just lock-on and fire 1/2 choke at present. Its easier than my moderated 12g where because of the large diameter and full choke I sight up then lift the gun so the barrel covers the target to centralize the F/C pattern. But its useful on the 'bird' side of the estate where the keeper doesn't want 'big-bangs' + not too loud to train the dog. The pup associates 'bang = squirrel' so when I was on the farside of the estate and the 'clays' started, he got so excited - to him there must be a mountian of squirrels. I will try and get my son to put a picture on the site - may put it on the 'air-gun section' by mistake - just to upset them. |

Shottie does not have to be on FAC. Just the slugs. BUT you can buy slugs over the counter with out FAC --IE not loaded. The law only comes into affect when you push it in the end of a case filled with powder. Then it becomes a NO NO. |
