Most of my shooting is in woods for squirrels, corvids etc by the hundred, so I never get in any much practice on flying birds as they tend to fly well out of range on the estate. For my summer work on the pens I have been invited to a 'walkabout' pheasant shoot next thursday, and I don't want to make a complete pratt of myself so I need a few tips please. *hunter+crow* I will be using my 30" 12g s/auto, what choke do you advise? Cartridges 30gr. 6's - or do you advise larger 'game carts? How high/far shall I let (any) birds fly before firing? Assuming they will be flying away, any technique/lead tips? Many thanks in advance - I normally let my son take my place on 'beaters day' as he's a better shot.

30gr 6's are fine, that is all I use on pheasant unless they are very very high and then I may go up to 32gr 6's. Choking will be fine at 1/2, I dont worry about chokes as none of my shotguns are swapable. As for shooting the bum belly beak bang mantra works on going away birds well and you will be surprised how many birds break out to the sides. Let them get up and away so you are shooting at about 30 yards but watch your safety at all times. I have a very simple rule, only shoot if there is blue sky behind the bird, you then know there is little risk of hitting anything you should not. But moost importantly, enjoy it! Jerry |

Most of the Pheasant shoots I have been on in the past have been conventional i.e. the birds driven by beater towards the guns. We have done some "walkabout" shooting though this can be more risky if certain rules aren't observed. The most obvious being the height birds are taken at. In woods of mature trees there is no problem shooting birds at tree top height, there is no chance of a ricochet with a shotgun. Let the bird get to a decent sporting height though I have seen some shooters get a bit excited and swing the gun across people this is a big no-no. Don't be greedy when you see birds on either side of you, give the neighbouring guns a chance - this will be noticed and vice versa if you shot everything. You can shoot Pheasants with 28g no.6's and an old 'keeper friend of mine used to shoot 24g - so you don't need heavy loads. Lastly if you have a S/S or an O/U it is more acceptable than a semi auto. photopro |

Bought my son a O/U on xmas eve - he clocked 4 crows with it on the way home, so I borrowed it for the shoot, but hadn't even fired it. Still managed to bag 4 pheasants - some drives I couldn't safely get in a shot - low birds but it was a good day out. The system was total bag with the species as a multiplier so with 50 Pheasant, 2 rabbit, 6 pigeon, 1 woodcock, 2 squirrels and a fox on the cart so it went well, finished up at shoot captians Golf club for a meal and free drinks - thats the way to go shooting. Got chatting to another keeper, told him of clocking up 400 squirrels on the estate - so he offered me some shooting on his estate - yes, 2 estates now. Beaters day 1 Feb - I expect my son to bag more than me, will let you know how it goes. |
