if you have a self closing trap id say any fresh veg like carrots cabbage ect ect .. but if snearing just a plain well used rabbit run will do nicely no need to bait rabbit runs maybe place ur trap near a well used rabbit run :D

good luck

Jake, you may laugh, but after extensive research by DEFRA they found sliced carrots to be the best bait! ;)

Looks like a good job on the trap Jake.

Pre-made snares usually cost 60p -£1 from a gun shop, and if you look around the 'net, you will find
lots of places where you can get 'kits' from.

jake ... do you have purse nets ?... and may i ask how you bolted the rabbits?...

also try baiting ur self closing trap with what danger sed sliced carrot .. and leave it well hiden in cover like a good bush where it wont be distured by humans and return everyday to see if you have caught anything ... you MUST defo go and check it on a regular basis because your animal will suffer and stress if you dont

good luck mate

Well said Kurt, another thing too, it is a legal requirement that water is placed into the trap, so that bunny can have a drink before you kill it!

I've just read through DEFRA's Rabbits: use of cage-trapping to
prevent agricultural damage, and it doesn't say anything about water.

It might not but with all live trapping water is supposed to be available. Don't know where this is stated but it might be under cruelty to Animals or something like that!

It won't hurt to put some water in it - especially in summer if it gets hot, and you're planning to eat what you catch.

As well as that, if you catch anything, and someone else just happens to see the trap, and report it to the RSPCA/police, it will show that you are using 'due diligence' in attempting not to cause un-nescesary suffering.

People like the RSPCA WILL look for any excuse to prosecute people for not treating
our fluffy friends properly!

Danger Mouse - if it were a legal requirement it would be made clear, you dont put a drink of water by every snare you set do you? Animals that will be in a trap for more than 24hrs (call birds) require food, water and shelter.

Nige - What you say is all good practice, But as for a prosecution, unless it is a glory job (dog fighting/badger digging) the RSPCA dont want to know (I work with them almost daily) as for the Police unless you are breaking a law there is not much they can do.

At the end of the day it's hard enough getting rabbits into cage traps, without a water bottle on the side or an utterly butterly tub full of water in there.
As for people stumbling over your cage traps, that is the quickest way to end up with them vandalised or stolen.
