Anyone here been up Ben Nevis? I foolishly said I'd go up it when my mate comes over from the US

Anyway, the time has come and on Sunday morning I'll be on my way up it :(

Or in the pub watching the other lads go up it

*cheers*

Ben Nevi is 4,406ft (1,344m) high, can take anything from 4 to 5 hours to climb and 3 or so to get back down

A long while back, I went to the top of Ben Nevis, and, as I remember, it was damned hard work!

Word of advice though - whatever the weather forecast, and whatever the weather's like at the bottom, make sure you take proper wet/cold weather kit!

shggys found me a blow up Lara Lewington!! but im waitin
ive climbed it 3 times
once in the summer
and ive ice climbed on it twice

if you take anything other than the tourist route its difficult but a good challenge

if you had said i might have come up to help as i love it up there and know the area reasnobly well

take extra clothing because the weather can change in a heartbeat
the summit is windy at the best of times but at this time of year with this weather i would think twice about summiting nevis

anyway good luck and i hope you come down safly
but dont be a hero that mountain claims too many unprepared lives

It's Monday and I'm back home, went up Ben Nevis on Sunday . Set off up the tourist path @ 8am, nice day but quite a lot of cloud cover, and how glad am I that we didn't set off an hour earlier :)

We were about half an hour down (200m?) on the Zig zaggy path from the point where it starts to level out on the plateau and we got hit by the worst weather I've ever seen in my life *lol*

All the footprints were gone in about 5 mins and our mate who was fitter than the rest of us who'd gone on ahead said he'd reached the plateau and could see the observatory only to be engulfed in the storm. He crapped himself trying to find the path down

We had maps and compasses but weren't experts by any means. After that it's easy to see how you can kill yourself up there, especially on the top where if you dont know exactly where you are, how do you know what bearing to head on

Loved every painfull minute of it though and would recommend it to anyone who's a bit active. The only exercise I get is at work on site, not done any running or hill walking for about 5 years, my thighs were ON FIRE at some points in the 3ft deep snow(hired boots and crampons) I could only take 20 steps or so before my legs exploded *lol*

Anyway, we all made it back to the nice pub at the bottom @ 15.30 feeling quite proud of ourselves :)

p.s I'll post the piccys/vids up soon

buy a hand held garmin gps unit
ive been using mine for about ten years and it makes navigation so easy
i think you can pick them up for about £100

but dont rely on them, they do let you down
good practice with a map and compass is whats needed
but when in solid cloud cover its difficult

but now you now why so many people loose there lives on that hill

Amazing place, oh and if you want deer, the area around Glencoe is absolutely crawling with them i must've seen a hundred. Maybe the weather drove them down from the peaks :)

Nice pictures mate, looks like a good day; apart from the clouds, I personally think that is the best sort of weather for going up (and down) mountains!

Neil, your legs ache just climbing into your truck don't they? *lol* *lol*
