Any tips and advice on using fen trap for grey squirrels,ie; do they need to be mounted in wooden boxes to protect dogs etc, and any setting up advice, please.

as when settng traps of any kind you must make sure you only catch what your after as far as possible

only tip with fen traps is to set them very fine on the brass latch and foot plate
as fine as possible but watch those fingers :o

A good bait on your trap is Digestive Sweetmeal biscuit, they're to die for! :D
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

Many thanks for the tips. The keeper has brought about 50 fen traps to clear the squirrels around the estate, and as I haven't used them before I didn't want the make the normal beginner mistakes. Not like one chap who when reloading an office stapler managed to staple two fingers together *jerk*

For myself, I'm quite happy shooting them at over 400 last year but there are areas near the village I can't shoot, and I need plenty of squirrls to feed the dog.

We only have a couple of cover boxes but I got my first squirrel in a trap today - its a start. On my walk about I shot another 3 making over 50 this year, as I skin part cook them for the dog its good to examine them - most are male this time of the year, tummies are still full and RW carts being faster definatly do the trick at a longer range.

This working cocker 'Blaze' can eat, 4- rabbit 'drummers' tonight, 4- squirrels ready for the next few days and more in the freezer. Sort of a dogs idea of interactive conservation.
