Went out tonight to check on the snares, and found that Ihad got a rabbit in one, and about ten feet further on, there's another with a rabbit. Both were still alive, so they can't have been there very long (and yes, the snares were round the necks!). A piece of 5.5mm lead into each of their heads soon put an end to their lives. After resetting the snares, I went on down the line (they are set up along the bottom of a chain link fence), and about 50 yards further on, I found a hedgehog caught in one.
I tried to free it, and got the loop loosened, but the bloody thing would not let me get the wire from round its neck, so I made sure the loop was as loose as I could get it, then put 'Tiggy Wiggy' on its back and left it.
I checked about an hour later, and it had gone. A couple of reasons I didn't kill it - I know hedgehogs are edible, I just don't fancy the idea, my ferrets might hurt themselves if I gave it to them, and I heard somewhere that they are on the protected species list (is this tue?)
Out of interest, does anybody else catch hedgehogs in their snares, and if so, what do you with them?

My guess is that they just let them go.

True - It is said Gypsies eat them but they aren't supposed to. Then again they aren't supposed to swipe the lead off a church roof either.......... *lol*

Netter, the snares were set along the bottom of a chain link fence, beneath a row 25 foot high 'pine' trees, in gaps at the bottom, where there appeared to be well worn paths. There are rabbit droppings both sides of the fence, and the loops were set about 2-3 inches off the ground, at around the level a rabbits head would be as they go through the gap.

You sound like the voice of experience Neil - is there really enough meat on a hedgehog to make a sandwich *lol* ?

That makes sense Nige, I was just worried that you had caught them on open runs, which would mean your loops were far too low.
I've caught them in Bodygrips, can't let them go after that though.

As for Neil and his sandwich, People ate a lot worse during the war.

There's nothing wrong with just cracking there necks mate, I just prefer to use a piece of lead.
