The Songbird Survival Trust has called for a more active public cull of magpies. Unusually this has had a bit of coverage in the broadsheets so should generate a bit of discussion. In the Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/...ampaigners.html And the Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/envi...icle6115155.ece |

About time too, however there will be some stupid organisation, maybe the RSPB who will claim it will make no difference. Even on a small scale such as your own garden it does make a big difference. So get your hand in your pockets and like me start using a Larsen trap every year. photopro |

Having lived in many city areas, the moaners have always been there telling us that the sparrow has vanished and at the same time they pull the old box and privet hedges down in favour of gaining an extra couple of inches garden and putting up panels. What do they expect the fesking birds to live in. Yes, magpies are a problem but there are a lot of other issues to deal with alongside a cull. Down here, there's very few well kept gardens, there's fields with hedgerows round them, there's bushes and trees and hey, the dawn chorus is almost deafening. Interspersed with the tweets and whistles, there's the occasional squawk and a twang as another black and white bar steward drops to the deck and turns into a fox snack. |
