I had planned to deer shoot this morning but an email received very late last night meant it had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. So today was free what to do ? I do have some accounts which desperately need doing or I could have a walk over to the golf course which is not only lifting with squirrels but also closed today due to last night's rain - Hmmm accounts or squirrel shooting ?? That's a tough one .........NOT - so the Benelli 12g came out !!
My previous best squirrel session was 6, not bad but I knew I would get close to that today and maybe even beat it. The course has a lot of young squirrels and they aren't so bright thinking being up a tree is enough. I had almosted reach my record within 45 minutes 5 for 5 shots, I called in on the greenstaff and they were elated so after a quick natter it was back out. The guys had told me where they had seen numerous young squizzers playing in the leaves so I went to investigate and sure enough 3 were racing about which I soon put paid to, new record 8. Walking back to a small copse I saw a flash of grey tail, bang number 9, two of the greenstaff had come over at this point and we walked to another copse, sure enough 3 more though this time all the noise had made them more wary and all 3 were off up the trees like well squirrels up a drainpipe ( **huh** ?). Anyone who has shot squirrels will know they are devious little bu99ers edging round the tree as you walk round looking for them a bit "Tom & Gerry" ish but they also make a distinctive scratching noise which gives them away. I got the first 2 one being very high up and with a single shot it plummetted much to the delight of the two greenstaff. The third looked like he was going to escape but I spied him through the branches of a Larch and moved him with a very close shot, he ran squealing, I've never had a squirrel do this before anyway several balls of No6 soon stopped that and the total was 12 - what a day, unless you were a squirrel. Walking back to a nearby ditch to dispose of the bodies - I can't offend the lady golfers - I spies what I though was the stump of a branch quite high up, no it isn't bang number 13 by this time I am just about out of cartridges. I decided to go back through one of the previously shot copses and blimey there's another peeping round a tree at me I clipped it but it managed to limp up a nearby Larch which contained a drey so with only 2 shells left I put one through the drey making my final total an impressive 14 !! **clappin** A cracking total which I know the course manager will be ecstatic about as squirrels have been doing a lot of tree damage on this course. *bliss*

Well done Pro. *Monkey Hanger* Nice shooting with the gun, not so good with the camera.

Maybe next time you should get a professional cameraman in? ***wist***

They can be a tricky quarry but after a while you notice a pattern in their behaviour, as I said the most important thing is listening for their distinctive scratching as they edge round the tree. If they have seen you from a distance and are already in the tree they will sit in the angle of a branch where it joins the tree trunk so sometimes it's a case of looking for the squirrel shaped stump !! Has anyone else had a squealer ? I've shot hundreds of squirrels and only had one.
