Religion. War. Empires. Kingdoms. Duchies. Knights. Sieges. We call them, the Dark Ages."

Introduction

The World, Anno Domini 1095. Long have passed the ages in which Europe was mostly united by the glorious Roman Empire, and its Golden Age, the Pax Romana. Now, stories of those times are just... stories, legends, myths, for the inhabitants of this dark and war thorn world. War and Death are the only thing the people of the Middle Ages were taking for granted. That, and the existence of God, which only created more wars.

The West, with its proud Kingdoms, is led in almost all matters by the power of the Pope, the one who names the Emperors and the Kings. Under siege from Infidels and Pagans from all parts, the West has finally, more or less managed to stop the wars between them, trying to focus on the external enemies. Countries like France, England, and the Holy Roman Empire are slowly gathering their strength. And if something doesn't happen, war will begin soon again.
The East, which had once been a proud part of the Imperium, is now facing an imminent disaster. The last shadow of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, is locked in an endless two front war, with the Slavs and the Pechenegs attacking from the North, and the Muslims from the East. The relations between the Orthodox East and the Catholic East aren't all that good, from which the Muslims will clearly benefit..

Even so, it's clear that a change is approaching. Empires will rise and fall. The fate of entire religions is going to be decided. The world will once again fall into darkness and wars. Welcome, to just another story set in the Dark Ages..

Explanation

So, hello nations from all accross the INWU, your glorious MoRP here. Let's start with a nation roleplay, since everyone likes nation roleplays, and something a little bloody, a medieval nation roleplay set right before the Crusades. Players will be able to control a medieval nation or faction of the time, and control its actions, deciding the fate of this world.

Let's have some fun, shall we?

Rules
1. I am the OP, so I am, by all means, a God here. The CO-OP's will be my little underlings, so they will also enjoy some of my divine power. Listen to us, or be impaled.
2. Godmodding will result into a quick and brutal impaling.
3. You can be a little alternative in your history, but with a good explanation
4. Unless that was already clear, the limit will be of one nation per player.
5. Nations can be destroyed, so anybody could lose their nations. Try to be realist, and not gangbang people though.
6. Act nice in the OOC. In the IC, you can act like a complete bastard, but keep it in the IC.
7. Keep any arguments, of any kind, out of this roleplay. Act nice.
8. If you break the rules, you get a strike. Three strikes are a direct ticket to Kolyma.
9. Put some effort in your posts. Try to be creative, and no one liners. One liner=Kolyma.
10. Please listen to the restrictions/instructions of the application.
11. Have fun, and enjoy this world... for as long as it will last.

Full Nation Name: The Roman Empire/Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων/Basileía Rhōmaíōna/Imperium Romanum
Short Nation Name: Byzantium
National Flag:
Territory:With Tyrian Purple
Official Language(s): Greek, Latin
Form of Government: Autocratic Monarchy
Head of State: Alexios I Komnenos, Basileius and Autokrator of the Roman Empire
Capital City: Constantinople, the Second Rome
Population: around 5 million
Religion: Eastern Orthodoxy is the main and only recognized religion in the Empire.
Army: At the beginning of the Komnenian period in 1081, the Byzantine Empire had been reduced to the smallest territorial extent in its history. Surrounded by enemies, and financially ruined by a long period of civil war, the empire's prospects had looked grim. Yet, through a combination of skill, determination and years of campaigning, Alexios I Komnenos managed to restore the power of the Byzantine Empire by constructing a new army from the ground up.
The new force is known as the Komnenian Army. It was both professional and disciplined. It contained formidable guards units such as the Varangian Guard and the Immortals (a unit of heavy cavalry) stationed in Constantinople, and also levies from the provinces. These levies included cataphract cavalry from Macedonia, Thessaly and Thrace, and various other provincial forces from regions such as the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor.
The Byzantine Empire can raise around 30,000 soldiers for now, including 5000 Varangian Guards, especially due to the organization of the proniai.
Navy: Only a shadow of its former, powerful self, the Byzantine Navy is the the process of recovering and strengtheminmg itself in order to take the fight to the Turks and the Infidels. For now, Byzantium can use about 150 ships.
Economic Strength: Economically, although the rule of Alexios I has been beneficial until now, the Byzantine Empire still needs time to recover from the damage of the previous century, and as such, it can't reach the same level of economic wealth as the Western nations. However, their profitable trade position, and many other factors clearly show that the Byzantine economy is going to recover as soon as possible.
Foreign Policy: The Empire is interested in both keeping the traitorous Westerners away, but it would also need help to fight the Muslim invaders, so its exact policy will depend upon how the situation will develop.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure in Byzantium was excellent in the past, and although it was damaged by the last century, it still regains a fairly good quality.
Primary Goals: To recover Asia Minor, to push the Slavs and the Infidels back, to survive.
History: I'm going completely with the Byzantine history until 1095.Link

Full Nation Name: The Nomadic Peoples of Savalen, Севайлен (Ugro-Mongolian)
Short Nation Name: Savalen
National Flag: Look at the Flag to the left or on NationStates
Territory: http://s17.postimg.org/8por70667/Savalan_Dark_Ages_RP.png. I didn't know how you were doing maps - if you want, I can add this to yours, but this is the outline of the area I want. The Dark green is my "home" region. The light green is where I roam/recieve money from other clans/groups.
Official Language(s): Urgo-Mongolian
Form of Government: "Constituional" Khanate (the Khan has the right to overrule any decisions the people make, but in general, he doesn't worry about small, provincial matters)
Head of State: Его Величество Тэмүжин Тэлэгету. His Greatness, Khan Timujin Telegetu "the Fair"
Head of Government: Same
Capital City: Nomadic People, but have a small city where foreign delegates are housed and greeted called Uzkand. Also on the great North-South Road (Armenia to Novgorod).
Population: 120,000
Religion: Shamanism
Army: All men spend 10 years in army, with particular focus on horse-riding and ambushing
Navy: None, except a few small river boats with guns and river defences asgainst invaders (currently unused, but upkept in case of an attack).
Economic Strength: Wealthy, similar to Mongolian Khanate later - trade in trading posts of other countries and take money from smaller clans and peoples, such as the Magyars (future Hungarians).
Foreign Policy: Keep life as it is - very prosperous and fair. However, the rise of Muslims, the fall of Armenia and the increase of battles to the south scares and interests them at the same time.
Infrastructure: Poor, except from large roads to the Crimea and the North-South road from Novgorod to Armenia.
Primary Goals: See foreign policy. Maybe expand East and West, towards Crimea. If conditions are right, control Armenia as these countries had been allies in the past, before it was taken over by Byzantium and then Seljuk Turks.
History: Not very interesting, but have slowly moved West from Mongolia. Currrently contol seperate clans/groups in their area (see map).

What about the map? What do you want me to do with that?
What was the RP example?

Thank you though!

As for the map, I tried to add it to the roleplay map, but putting it in the exact same spot would be really hard, since your map and the roleplay map have different provinces.

Would something like this be acceptable, or do you want it elsewhere?

Too far north, but i think if you move it a little south, with the three southeast being to the east of the dark green region, that would be good.
I wouldn't be too bothered, but where you put me originally - that's Novgorod, so i can't have it.

The app's semi-historical. From what I've read, Ireland was actually pretty divided by this time. For the essence of the RP, I'm going to change it to an elective monarchy. It still keeps the 'kings choose' while also having a leader. Pretty much, the Battle of Clontarf never happened or Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig won instead of dying. I hope it's not too bad.

Full Nation Name: Ríoghacht Éireann (Kingdom of Ireland)

Short Nation Name: Ireland

National Flag:
Spoiler: click to toggle

Territory: The Deep Green

Official Language(s): Irish Gaelic, the rare Latin

Form of Government: Elective Monarchy

Head of State: Gaelman mac Murchad, Ard Rí na hÉireann (High King of Ireland)

Head of Government: Same

Capital City: Cnoc na Teamhrach (Hill of Tara)

Population: 348,000 (rough estimate)

Religion: Christianity; seeing a resurgence of Celtic Deities, spurred on by the current king and his supporters.

Army: Minor Kings have personal retinues, no larger than 150. Major Kings have retinues of around 300. The High King has a personal retinue of 450. While the kings have a few bodyguards, usually equipped with scale or chainmail, longwords, and spears, the majority of their retinues and standing armies are made up of ceithern, or Kerns. Kerns are usually lightly armored, if at all, and wield a large arsenal of weapons. These included a sword (claideamh), long dagger (scian), bow (bogha) and a set of javelins or darts. Another common force is chariot cavalry. The armies are decently trained, though they haven't needed to fight may wars aside from the rare Norwegian raid. The numbers of warriors has been steadily increasing lately and rumors have been circulating among the higher lords that war was brewing on the horizon.

Navy: Mostly cogs used for transport between the Ireland and the slightly larger island to the east.

Economic Strength: Moderate. They're not particularly wealthy, but trade with Scotland, various welsh communities, and the Anglo-Saxons have kept their people well enough off.

Foreign Policy: Peaceful and friendly with it's neighbors, though it seems to have set it's sights on the Isle of Man and the divided Kingdom of Wales

Infrastructure: Basic dirt roads between most towns and cities, with larger settlements having paved streets and highways. There is the occasional Stone fort or walled town, though most are protected by wood, turf, or, most commonly, a mixture of the two. Farms are very common and provide a large portion of the exports to other kingdoms.

Primary Goals: Survive, thrive, and expand. Éirinn go Brách!

History: See: High Kings
Ireland

Head of State: Pope Urban II
Head of Government:
Capital City: Rome
Population: 351,562 ctizens
Religion: Roman Catholic
Army: The Papal Army is relatively small in "size", it is mainly made up of Guard units, Knights, other mercenaries and Catholic volunteers. The army is commanded by The Captain General of the Church. The total force is 15,230 men:

- 7000 Palatinate Guard (Pavise Crossbow Militia, Pike Militia, Italian Spear Militia, Halberd Militia, Religious Fanatics, Hunters, Flagellants, Peasant Archers, Pisan and Genoese Sailors, Swordsmen Militia, Peasants, Peasant Crossbowmen, Merchant Cavalry Militia, Cavalry Militia, Sword Staff Militia, Voulge Militia, Archer Militia, Bill Militia, Heavy Bill Militia, Heavy Pike Militia, Berdiche Militia, Peasant Javelinmen, Pavise Spearmen, )

- 5000 Papal Foreign Legion (Arbalesters, Doppelsöldner, Free Company Longbowmen, Free Company Men at Arms, Landsknecht Pikemen, Mercenary Crossbowmen, Mercenary Frankish Knights, Mercenary German Knights, Mercenary Pavise Crossbowmen, Mercenary Spearmen, Sergeant Swordsmen, Swiss Pikemen, English Huscarls, Gwent Raiders, Welsh Longbowmen, Welsh Spearmen, Macemen, Galloglaich, Irish Kerns, Flemish Pikemen, Dismounted Mercenary German Knights, Prussian Spearmen, Condottieri, Axemen, Viking Mercenaries, Catalans, Highland Pikemen Mercenaries, Swabian Swordsmen, Andalusian Infantry, Mercenary Latin Knights, Italian Mercenaries, Mounted Crossbowmen, Mercenary Basque Archers, Mercenary Prussian Archers)

- 500 Scandinavian Guard
- 500 Papal Guard
- 500 Scots Guard

- 300 Knights of St. Peter Order
- 300 Knights of Giglio Order
- 300 Knights of St. Paul Order
- 300 Knights of St. James Order
- 30 Knights of the Templar Order

Navy: 30 War Galleys + some non combat ships
Economic Strength: Similar to the Byzantine Empire's; Great in the past but now the Papacy is trying to rebuild its former self into greatness. Makes money by trade, tourism, famous relics on tour, and handouts of money from Florence (and secretly the Byzantine Empire)
Foreign Policy: Hostile to "dirty" muslims and heretics known as the Orthodox Byzantines, although in reality the Pope is secretly allied with the Byzantine Empire and wants to help restore the rightful Emperor of the true Rome itself and once and for all reunite the Orthodox and Catholic Churches into one. He will try to accomplish this through diplomatic skills with other nations and if necessary war through newly formed military orders such as the Knights Templar and his small but elite Papal army.
Infrastructure: Same as the Economic Strength; not the best but quite adequate. At least Rome is being improved substantially thanks to the openminded Pope himself.
Primary Goals: Spread the one true faith, counter influences of Islamism, help restore the True Rome and reunite the Catholic and Orthodox Churches into One, squeeze as much money from the Catholic nations for "Sex, Power, War and Money" and the occasional church building. Oh, and unify Italia...wait I forgot the Iberian Kingdoms...and perhaps more?
History: The seeds of the Papal States as a sovereign political entity were planted in the sixth century. The Eastern Roman (or Byzantine) government in Constantinople launched a reconquest of Italy that took decades and devastated the country's political and economic structures; just as those wars wound down, the Lombards entered the peninsula from the north and conquered much of the countryside. By the seventh century, Byzantine authority was largely limited to a diagonal band running roughly from Ravenna, where the Emperor's representative, or Exarch, was located, to Rome and south to Naples. With effective Byzantine power weighted at the northeast end of this territory, the Bishop of Rome, as the largest landowner and most prestigious figure in Italy, began by default to take on much of the ruling authority that Byzantines were unable to project to the area around the city of Rome. While the Bishops of Rome — now beginning to be referred to as the Popes — remained de jure Byzantine subjects, in practice the Duchy of Rome, an area roughly equivalent to modern-day Latium, became an independent state ruled by the Church.
The Church's independence, combined with popular support for the Papacy in Italy, enabled various Popes to defy the will of the Byzantine emperor; Pope Gregory II even excommunicated emperor Leo III the Isaurian. Nevertheless the Pope and the Exarch still worked together to control the rising power of the Lombards in Italy. As Byzantine power weakened, though, the Papacy took an ever larger role in defending Rome from the Lombards, usually through diplomacy, threats and bribery. In practice, the papal efforts served to focus Lombard aggrandizement on the Exarch and Ravenna. A climactic moment in the founding of the Papal States was the agreement over boundaries embodied in the Lombard king Liutprand's Donation of Sutri (728) to Pope Gregory II

The Badass of

Full Nation Name: Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Secrecy
Short Nation Name: Knights Templar
National Flag: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar#/media/File:Templar_Flag_6.svg
Territory: The island of Malta
Official Language(s): Latin, Many other European languages, based on the origin of said member.
Form of Government: Military Rank (Dictator like)
Head of State: Grand Master
Head of Government: Pope
Capital City: Melita
Population: 30
Religion: Roman Catholic, focal part of the order
Army: The order was comprised of 30 men that formed an elite task force responsible to do the popes biding. There were three main groups within the order, the noble knights, the non-noble sergeants, and the chaplains. The Noble Knights were the fighting force. They were the ones that entered cities to poison wells or assassinate leaders. The others were involved in support positions. The non-noble sergeants were members that provided vital skills such as blacksmiths, builders, traders, etc. These members were responsible for generating money from teh land on Malta and then planning and financing the missions. Lastly, the Chaplains were ordained priests that cared for other Templar members spiritual needs, they were also the envoys between the order and the Pope. All three groups wore the red cross that was the symbol of the order.
Navy: The order had one cog, a trade vessel, given to them by the pope to undergo their "investigations."
Economic Strength: The Templar Knights were in large economically financed by the Pope, although they did hold the island of Malta and the estates on the island produced more money used by the order to buy equipment as well as finance travel. The order had its home on Malta in the city of Melita, which was an old Roman city with heavily fortified city walls.
Foreign Policy: The orders goal was to aid the pope and Christianity in gaining a foot hold in the Middle East, specifically Jerusalem. However their original intent was to shield the pope against the HRE. They were also the men sent by the pope to instigate coups and deal with foreign enemies.
Infrastructure: My nation has no infrastructure aside form the buildings and roads constructed on Malta.
Primary Goals: The primary goal is to guard the Pope and ensure the dominance of the christian church in Europe
History: The Knights Templar were founded by nine knights, including Godfrey de Saint-Omer and André de Montbard. The order was created to "investigate" the rising Muslim power, this was the pretense given by the church to fund the organization. In reality the Pope wanted an extra barrier between himself and the Holy Roman Empire. The force was created as a secret society to provide information to the Pope and if necessary "remove" certain obstacles or persons if need be. The first task the Templar's had been assigned was to overthrow the Islam government on Malta. In 1091 AD the "Norman" conquest of Malta was organized by the order and they successfully returned the island to Christendom. In return the Pope gave the island of Malta to the order to serve as their base of operations. Europe and the Middle East are now on the verge of a power shift as never seen before, and the Templar Knights are ready to serve the Pope in his quest to secure Christianities stance in Europe.
RP Example: I have not done an RP before :'/
