NASHVILLE -- Ryan Kesler is finding his scoring touch, and that is very good news for the Vancouver Canucks. Kesler scored a pair of third period goals, leading the Canucks to a 3-1 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. Kesler has four goals in his last two games. With the game tied at 1 in the third, he scored twice from just outside the Nashville crease. "It was a battle and there wasnt a lot of room out there, but we found a way to win again, and thats what we need to keep doing," Kesler said. "Youve got to fight to get to those tough areas and we did tonight." Kesler scored his first at 7:37. From the left side, Jason Garrisons slap shot was stopped by Nashville goaltender Marek Mazanec, but Kesler outmuscled Nashvilles David Legwand for the rebound and beat Mazanec with a wrist shot. "Both teams were playing, and we were matched pretty evenly," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "It came down to who was more detailed, disciplined, and who was winning all of those 1-on-1 battles." Kesler struck again at 14:15. With the Canucks on a power play, Kesler collected the rebound of another shot by Garrison in the low slot and backhanded it past Mazanec. "Kesler has been playing really well, he was probably our best player tonight," Vancouver coach John Tortorella said. "He put us on his shoulders there and I thought led the way." Brad Richardson also scored for Vancouver, which has won three of four. Colin Wilson scored for Nashville, losers of three straight. Richardson scored the games first goal at 15:24 of the second period. From the goal line to the right of the Nashville net, Richardson passed to Dale Weise in the right circle. Weises shot was stopped by Mazanec, but the rebound came right to Richardson, and he banked in a shot off of Mazanecs left leg pad. On the same day he was named the NHLs Rookie of the Month for November, Mazanec made his 11th straight start in goal for the Predators. Wilson answered back just 30 seconds after Richardsons goal. Skating through the slot, Patric Hornqvist slid a nice pass to Wilson on the right post. From there, Wilson had an easy tap-in past Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo for his fifth goal of the season. "It was a typical game that we play against these guys; low-scoring, tight checking game," Luongo said. "It was tough to get the lead and give it up 30 seconds later, but guys stuck with it. We had a big third period and the power-play goal was huge for us there." Wilson has scored in consecutive games for the first time this season. "Its good to get that goal," Wilson said. "I felt we still had a chance in the third. We have to start scoring." After missing three games with an upper-body injury, Hornqvist has an assist in each of his last two games. Vancouver defenceman Alexander Edler did not return to the game after the first period. Tortorella said that Edler had a lower-body injury and is day to day. Ronaldo, who was hit on the head by a cigarette lighter at halftime, converted a pair of early penalties at the Vicente Calderon to put the match beyond Atleticos reach. Atletico beat Madrid at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to lift the trophy last season, but exits the domestic cup competition with doubts about its surprise Spanish league aspirations. Madrid will face either Barcelona or Real Sociedad in the April 19th final, with Barcelona leading 2-0 going into the second leg at San Sebastian. "Its the least important competition of our season but a final is always something nice for the team," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Already trailing 3-0, Atletico was also missing strikers Diego Costa and David Villa plus goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Filipe Luis for Tuesdays second leg match. Despite Atletico coach Diego Simeones promises of a rally, the hosts were effectively out of the competition just seven minutes into the game when the inexperienced Javier Manquillo shoved Ronaldo from behind inside the area to set up the opening spot kick. Ronaldo blasted his shot into the left side of net, past the diving Daniel Aranzubia, to end a three-game goal drought. Raul Garcia, who was moved up from midfield to striker because off the absences, saw his shot come off the post just moments before Madrid doubled its advantage.dddddddddddd "The first leg was very important, of course, and the two penalties also," Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas said. "They took some of their bite away." Atletico defender Emiliano Insua slid into Gareth Bale to set up the second penalty after 16 minutes, with Ronaldo beating Aranzubia to the same side but along the ground for his 34th goal of the season. There was little drama beyond that apart from the yellow lighter that struck Ronaldo as he left for the dugout at halftime, which could lead to a fine or sanction for Atletico. "Those two quick goals changed the face of the game," Atletico midfielder Jose Sousa said. Manquillo was taken to hospital after he came down awkwardly on his neck just before halftime. Casillas extended his run to 863 minutes without conceding, a run stretching back to November in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Madrid has now gone 24 matches unbeaten, but it wont have Ronaldo back in its lineup until its Champions League match at Schalke on Feb. 26. He will miss the next two league games as he completes a three-match ban. A third loss in a week has dented Atleticos season as the surprise La Liga challengers have been undone by injuries and fatigue from a mounting schedule. Madrid beat Barcelona 1-0 in extra-time to win the Copa del Rey in 2011. ' ' '
