More injury woes for Mike Green, Dan Carcillo making his mark, injury news, streaking Red Wings and Bruins and more. IT AINT EASY BEING GREENRemember the days when Washington D Mike Green was the premier offensive defenceman in the game? He might be capable of re-claiming that title this season, but he hasnt been able to stay healthy enough to stake his claim to the crown. In eight games this season, Green has three goals and three assists, but left Friday nights game against the Devils with a knee injury and isnt going to travel with the Capitals. Going back to last year, Green has missed 27 of Washingtons last 35 regular-season games. Dennis Wideman takes the lead on the power play with Green out and John Carlson may see more time with the man advantage if Green is going to be out for a while. Wideman played a career-high 33:52 Saturday. SEMIN SITSCapitals LW Alexander Semin is in a bad slump, putting up two points in the last eight games and found himself benched against New Jersey on Friday night, playing just 8:25, his lowest ice time in a game since January 1, 2008. When hes on, Semin gives the Capitals a second line that is difficult for opponents to match; when hes playing like he is now, the Capitals are much easier to defend. CAR BOMB GOES BOOMDaniel Carcillo is used to making his presence felt on the ice, but hes getting a chance to do more with the Blackhawks than just create mayhem. Carcillo has been playing with Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp and has tallied four points in the last three games, his most productive three-game stretch since the final three games of the 2007-2008 season. GOLLY GONEStars D Alex Goligoski will be out for the next month with a broken thumb, suffered Friday against his old team, in Pittsburgh. Look to Stephane Robidas and Trevor Daley to get more offensive opportunities in Goligoskis absence. JOKINEN RETURNS Carolinas offence should start to improve now that Jussi Jokinen is healthy and combining with Tuomo Ruutu and Jeff Skinner on their Finns and Skins line, which combined for seven points against Pittsburgh Saturday night. STAAL TACTICMired in a horrible slump to start the season, Carolinas Eric Staal has been shifted to the wing on a line with Chad LaRose and Brandon Sutter. Staal recorded two points against Pittsburgh Saturday, snapping a seven-game scoreless slump, while playing a season-high 23:30. SHOOTING RANGEPenguins C Evgeni Malkin had 12 shots against Carolina Saturday, tying a career-high that he has reached twice before (October 20, 2009, vs. St. Louis and January 14, 2009 vs. Washington), though Malkin had scored a goal in the previous two instances and did not in Saturdays loss. HEAVY HITTERWashington LW Alexander Ovechkin registered 11 hits against New Jersey Saturday, but that may be the first sign of the kind of physical play that has been expected from Ovechkin. Through 15 games, he has 34 hits (including that 11-hit outburst), an average of 2.27 per game, which is his lowest hits-per-game since 2006-2007, his second year in the league, when he had 2.24 per game. Hitting is hardly the best measure of a players contribution, most notably because it can only happen when the other team has the puck, and Ovechkins ice time and shots on goal are down this year too, but there may be a little something to Ovechkin playing with the kind of physical intensity that made him so unstoppable at his peak. It doesnt mean the Capitals need 11 hits every night, but there are advantages to being as strong and fast as Ovechkin is, so it wouldnt hurt his game to use that size to his advantage. HES BACKMikael Backlund played played in his first couple of games for Calgary, quickly being inserted onto the top line, between Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla. Backlund is just 22, and has potential, but there arent a lot of teams keeping top line centre spots for pivots that scored 25 points last season. Friday night at Chicago, Backlunds first game, the trio was a combined minus-8. GO-GO GOMEZScott Gomez returned to the Montreal lineup Saturday, but the Canadiens didnt force him into a significant role, playing him just 12:06 and while he saw time on the power play, Gomez skated primarily on a line with Mathieu Darche and Petteri Nokelainen. GET CARTERColumbus C Jeff Carter returned to the lineup Saturday, playing 21:22 in his first game since October 15. The Blue Jackets season is a lost cause, but Carter can certainly make them more competitive, especially if he finds chemistry with Rick Nash. MORE JACKETS NOTESBlue Jackets rookie Ryan Johansen hasnt been able to secure his spot in the lineup, as hes been a healthy scratch on occasion, but four goals and a plus-2 rating in the last four games, playing primarily with Mark Letestu and Vaclav Prospal, might help keep Johansen as a regular. In his first game after being acquired from St. Louis D Nikita Nikitin played a career-high 24:57 for Columbus. HOT WINGSRed Wings RW Johan Franzen didnt record a shot in back-to-back games at the start of November, but Mule has been in beast mode since, scoring five goals and nine points in the last four games, finding good chemistry with C Valtteri Filppula, who has six points in the last four games after going scorless in the previous six. Red Wings D Niklas Kronwall opened the season with two assists in the first ten games, but has three goals and five points in five games since. With Ian White out after taking a shot in the face, there should be additional offensive opportunities for Kronwall going forward. YOUNG DEVILSThough he hasnt scored a point in the last two games, after six in a four-game stretch, Devils rookie C Adam Henrique played a season-high 22:12 at Washington Saturday. If Henrique establishes that he can handle this responsibility, he could remain in a top-six role even when Travis Zajac returns to action. The latest combination of lines for the Devils, with Ilya Kovalchuk still sidelined, has Henrique with Zach Parise and second-year RW Nick Palmieri, the latter in the midst of a five-game point drought. BRUINS SOPHOMORE STARSIts no secret that Tyler Seguin is enjoying a breakthrough season, scoring 20 points in his first 15 games, so that he now sits two points behind his rookie season total, but Seguins ascent has also helped Brad Marchand, who has eight points and is plus-8 during a five-game point streak. The two young wingers, skating with Patrice Bergeron, have ignited a Bruins offence that has scored 30 goals in the last five games. BASIC BLUED Kevin Shattenkirk has emerged as the premier option on the St. Louis blueline, scoring a point-per-game in the last eight, and getting 24:23 of ice time Saturday, a season-high that was surpassed just twice in Shattenkirks rookie campaign. While new Blues D Kris Russell scored a goal in his debut, he also played a modest 14:19, so dont go overboard right away on his connection to coach Ken Hitchcock. COUNTER POINTGoing the other way, to Colorado when Shattenkirk was traded to St. Louis last season, was Erik Johnson, who played a season-low 17:40 Saturday and now has a minus-9 rating through 17 games. HOWLING FOR YOUCoyotes G Mike Smith had a 31-save shutout against San Jose Saturday, the seventh straight game in which he allowed three goals or fewer and he had at least 30 saves in six of those contests. PENNER DUSTEDKings LW Dustin Penner has been put on IR with a hand injury. Penner has been awful for the Kings this year, with no goals in 14 games, so his absence doesnt hurt the team, and it could provide an opportunity for Andrei Loktionov, who was called up from the AHL after tallying 14 points in 17 games. Loktionov has 45 points in 51 career AHL games. BLACKHAWKS BLUELINEWhile Chicago lost Brent Seabrook to injury Sunday, the rest of the news about their defence has been awfully positive. Duncan Keith returned to action last week and had four points and a plus-5 rating in four games; Steve Montador has finally started contributing, putting up three goals in the last three games and second-year D Nick Leddy continues his rapid climb, playing a career-high 27:20 Sunday and he now has eight points in the last nine games. ROME IS RISINGVanouver D Aaron Rome, who was out at the start of the season with a broken hand, has been on a tear since joining the Canucks, putting up three goals, five points and a plus-3 rating in his first four games, and hes done it while averaging a modest 14:11 of ice time per game. FINNISH TRIOAnaheims claim of LW Niklas Hagman on re-entry waivers gives the Ducks a shot at putting together a second line comprised of Finns -- Hagman, Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne. Anaheims secondary scoring has been so pitiful that Hagman, who has four points in eight games this season, would already tie for sixth (with Andrew Cogliano) among Anaheims forwards in scoring, even though most have played twice as many games. Hagman is a three-time 20-goal scorer, so if he does find some chemistry with new linemates, he might have a bit of an offensive renaissance.
