Firstly, if you know how torrents and computers work you can go here: http://z7.invisionfree.com/swinmtg/ar/t421.htm If you can manage all that you'll have access to a program that lets you build just about any 4e character under the sun and shows you all the options and does all the math. If you can't manage it, don't worry about, we can stick with the stuff in the books too. Secondly, what sort of adventure do we want to go on? Broadly speaking, before we even make characters it might be wise to rough up some idea of what we're going to be doing. Fantasy conquistadors who get ship wrecked and stranded in the new world? Idiot body guards to the princess who let her get kidnapped and now have been cursed by the court wizard with chronic crotch itch till they get her back? Drug dealers working up through the ranks of the black market? Dung farmers who found a scrap of treasure map? Knights seeking a holy grail? Escaped slaves looking for revenge? Add ideas if you have any... OR... tell me what kind of character you want to play and we'll figure out a plot based around that. Like David just said something about a drow paladin, so how would he buddy up with a queer half-elf warlock? (or what ever) |

anyways, I was thinking and i think I'd rather just be fighter type as it will be much easier for me to decide what to do especially as I am learning this system. I like the ideas 1) knights/adventruers seeking the holy grail or 2) fantasy conquistadors. I'd rather play something on the more epic side as opposed to silly/perverted. That being said, I am down for a little role playing, not just hulk smash all the time. I'm thinking of making an Eladrin Slayer... Thanks for setting this up Nick! |

Oh ho, so Josh wants to be the smasher eh? Well I can stick to being a Drow Cleric then. I do not care what we do. As I said, if you'd like Nick, I can DM, or at the very least we can take turns. And yeah, lets just take it easy until Josh gets the hang of things. As to that, beware the Slayer Josh. They're simple, but a little too simple. Thats what Gunk my Half-Orc is and it really is just chop, chop, chop, with an occasional charge. Its fun, but one dimensional. If you want to do the Eladrin thing there is that fighter variant thats basically a teleporting elf asshole. Could be cool. I'm sure Nick could e-mail that file to you. |

Oh and houserule: everyone gets Melee Training in their best stat (Use wis/dex/con/cha/int modifier in place of strength for melee basic attacks, and use half that modifier for damage). This is so your opportunity attacks aren't half worthless if your primary ability isn't Strength. And David if you go to orokos.com you can upload this file to have an online character sheet. And have a place to roll dice online from. |

I was going to take melee training anyways and just max out my dex to 20 as opposed to strength. And then I wouldn't even need to wear heavy armor. That way I could get the slayer dext damage bonus and get a + 5 to attack rolls from dext. The thought of a teleporting knight to chop the heads off of little goblins! BUt I can see what you mean that the slayer might be a bit boring... |

Everything's fairly simple to wrap your head around anyway at 1st level (in the essentials book anyway), so don't pick a class based on simplicity. |

Well if you were to be a slayer you'd want both Strength and Dex. You get the damage bonus from both (my half orc got +4 from each) and you'd be +4 to hit without a feat, which comes out to +7 or +8 at first level depending on your weapon. And yeah, just wear leather and your starting AC would be 17 which is pretty much the same as someone wearing heavy armor plus you don't suffer the speed penalty. A mage would be really cool. They're really great damage dealers and the cool thing about them is that at first level you get to select two at-will attacks and you can tailor it so that your attacks roll against their Will/Fort/Reflex defense so you can adjust your tactic to each opponent and make it so that you're virtually guaranteed to land each attack. Plus theres one attack that lets you shift the opponent around when you hit them and allows you to keep the range on them. Or zap them into a pit or off of a cliff. All the fun stuff! |

Ok, I know I'll regret it if I dont: I'm going to be a elf or drow or eladrin mage. Lets DO this! |

oh yeah, quick questions about the mage: 1) for the spellbook/spells memorized per day: I know I can only have 1 spell per level memorized, but is this just PER specific slot (ie encounter or daily). In other words, at first level, I can have a level 1 encounter and a level 1 daily BOTH memorized at the same time right? 2) can I have the ROD implement proficiency to start (If need be, I'll give up orb or staff) ? 3) when you "slide" creatures with a power, can you slide in any direction, or if its a burst, does it slide from the center of the expolsion? Thanks! |

At level 1 you have prepared one encounter power and one daily power, and zero utility powers as per the table on page 200. A slide is movement in any direction you choose. A Push has to be away from you, a Pull has to be towards you. Burst just defines the type of area of effect (a set radius centered on you) not how you force movement in your enemies. And yes you can have free rod proficiency. |

oh yeah, and what happens if you have a 14 for Con, giving you a + 2 modifier to fortitude but you also have an 8 for Str (which has a -1 modifier)? Do you go with the highest and say you have a + 2 to fortitude or do you add them and get + 1 total. I know it says use which is higher, but i'm not sure what to do if you have a - modifier to the other one? |

you ignore the penalty and use the higher one And you can post your character here in whatever form you've got it and I'll remake it with the character builder program so you get a file you can upload to orokos.com and have that kind of character sheet. |

https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B-5cE1l_HXL4ZjA3NWFmMTYtYzY2ZS00MTNiLWE0ZmEtMzQ0ZTc5ZDRiM2M2/edit If you want to have the other books on hand, here are digital versions of a lot of them. The main ones are the Player's Handbook I, II, and III. Warden is a class from II, a sort of druidic version of a knight (defender with based on primal power rather than martial), and Wilden are a race from III of sort of earth spirit, quasi-dryad things given mortal form. I was kind of just fucking around and made a character quickly in the character builder program though, David's waffling between knight and cleric so I'll see what he wants to be first and then fill in the leader/defender hole. |

So David claims he's making a drow paladin, based on which I'm very strongly considering a goblin druid. With a bear. |
