A Struggling Empire
"The Empire is on the verge of collapse. The Emperor, Demosthene, mourns the death of his Queen and disappearance of his beloved son Uther. Growing weaker each passing day, he granted his two most trusted advisers, Hubert de Layle and Ambrielle Gallean, the right to rule The Empire in his stead. Hubert has skillfully been playing upon The Emperor's emotional strings to manipulate him into running The Empire as de Layle sees fit. A number of nobles see this as a power play, and are prepared to back Hubert in his efforts, believing it is time for a change. Hubert continues to squander The Empire's resources through senseless feasts, elaborate celebrations and debauchery. This has lead to the Woden becoming increasingly confident in their efforts to attack Imperial citizens and invade Imperial cities.

A few minor towns have already fallen to the invading Orcs and their Goblin allies, barbarians, and Demons. These dire times have also lead to the rise in power of several up and coming figures, including Erhog the Dark and Emry the Vile, the leaders of the notorious death cult whom have been accused of summoning the dead. Rumours are even stirring that the two have poisoned The Emperor Demosthene, implicating the cult as responsible for his weakened state and the disarray of the nation.

Some of the nobles remain loyal to Demosthene and follow Ambrielle, believing de Layle to be both a traitor to the crown and a heretic to the Highfather. These nobles hail from each Imperial race and some have even begun recruiting barbarians to their cause. While The Empire is technically in a state of peace, war is on the horizon. Many counselors advise that a civil war will give the Woden more than enough opportunity to invade the nation and eventually siege the Capital, others believe a civil war must happen to ensure future stability, and that the Woden threat is merely a fantasy.

South of The Empire, deep in the heart of Nevendaar, lies The Wending Woods, the place where the Woden have considered home for almost a decade. The source of the Woden is one of the few things not recorded in The Grand Library, though it's debated whether or not it was removed or never existed. The Inquisition has been unable to find the source, even with the help of their magic-attuned trackers, though nobody doubts that dark magic is involved. There have been a few recordings in history of some Woden being friendly, though most barbarians simply follow the sound of coin trickling and the creatures usually have some kind of ulterior motive to assist The Empire.

So, traveler, what say you, eh? Shall you assist The Empire and support Ambrielle, or are you here to back up de Layle? Perhaps you're just here to earn a profit. After all, Nevendaar still has plenty of people that need help. Dozens of quests to be completed regardless of The Empire's situations. Well? Never mind. I suppose you have business elsewhere then, as do I. Farewell, traveler, and good luck to you, whatever your intentions may be."

The shady figure turns his body, his cloak fluttering around to cover him. Nevendaar's fate rests in your hands.
