Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Gavrila grinned, but didn't say a word. If things went well here, in all likelihood there would be a Cetatsen visiting Fenwick sometime in the near future. And that Cetatsen would be Gavrila herself; with Aurel accompanying her of course. And from what she'd seen Ned seemed like a good man, with good looks to boot, and she found herself honestly hoping everything went well.

Aurel stood silently behind Gavrila as he always did, silently thankful that Ned had changed the topic. While he was fine talking about the topic, it was a major part of history after all and so liable to come up in conversation, it still brought up some unpleasant memories he'd rather not deal with. It had been over 60 years, but the murder of his family at the hands of the Intermarines was still not a topic he liked to swell upon.

Jia Li smiled. "I'm just facilitating your visit. I'm not your secretary," she teased him. "Though we could take some time tomorrow. I'd have to call in a meeting with a few of my ministers...and your poor ambassador."

Ned raised his eyebrow at Jia Li. "I meant how we keep each other informed on trade agreements, et cetera?"

"Really? All this time, I just thought your father agreed to everything I said," Jia Li replied with a smirk.

"Jia Li," Xel said.

She clucked her tongue. "We discussed an outline of our expectations when we were in Cetatsenia, but the ministers haven't signed off on anything official. I was going to send it over to your father once I'd seen."

Ned chuckled at the banter. "Alright, I'll leave it to the heads of state then. In the meantime I'll just enjoy having dinner with you all."

He looked up at Aurel. "I don't mean to be impolite but do you ever sit, sir? I can't imagine you're all that comfortable with all that standing."

"I am used to standing around, I may be old but I am not weak," Aurel said politely, "And I feel like it would be improper for me to dine wiz you all, as I am just a servant."

"Fuck zat; Aurel, just sit down here and eat wiz us," Gavrila said, rolling her eyes and laughing, "You are so old-fashioned sometimes."

Aurel sighed and followed the Knezinja's command, moving forward and slowly sitting down next to her. Though he would never admit it, it was a welcome relief from all the standing around. He may be in better shape than most his age, but all that standing was still tiring, especially with his old leg injury. "You cannot blame me for be old-fashioned zough, can you doamna?" he said.

Gavrila laughed and shook her head. "Nah, I guess not," she said, putting her arm around the elderly man's shoulder and laughing.

One of the chitaels trotted over to Aurel, curious about the new lap, but Jia Li barked and order and she returned to Jia Li's side, resting her head obediently on her lap. "Please, have some refreshments too," she said.

Aurel nodded in assent, resigning himself to the fact that he was going to be eating with the group, and took some of the food and drink. He didn't have much however, as his stomach wasn't a bottomless pit like Gavrila's.

"You know, I have to admit, zose are some really well trained cats," Gavrila said, "Better zan some of my greats rats, even."

Jia Li nodded as she pet Nemesis, who purred and shifted her position to allow herself to be pet where she wanted. "They're very intelligent, probably about the same intelligence as dolphins, so their cooperation stems from rewards. In this case, they bond very closely to certain humans and while you'd traditionally call them 'owners', that's not quite true either. Most of them are even 'captured' from the wild since, they don't breed in captivity, so they're actually quite amazing. That's why our nation believes they are our Goddesses' guardians. How else would you explain it?"

Gavrila just shrugged, "I am certain animal behaviorists can explain it somehow, but zat is not exactly somezing I know anyzing about." She didn't mean to imply that the Demonessians' beliefs were wrong, she was simply voicing her opinion on the matter, but it could be construed that way.
