Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Gavrila nodded. "Ah, I see," then she chuckled to herself, "Heh, my cousin Andrei would probably want to shake your hand. He has a great respect for people zat do your job, and I can sure as hell see why."

"Boz. But search and rescue in particular," Gavrila replied, "Somezing about putting your life on ze line in order to rescue people. I mean, he would put it a bit more eloquently, but zat is ze gist of it."

Ned shrugged. "Someone's got to do it. I would hate to be out there, somewhere unfamiliar, injured, and not knowing if there was someone trying to find me. If I can do it, but wouldn't do it for someone else, how could I expect someone to take that risk for me?"

"Zat is a damn good point," Gavrila said, then smiled, "And if you want to do it, zen zat is great; more power to you. Not everyone is willing to take risks like zat for anozer person. Especially strangers."

Ned laughed. "I guarantee that we're not strangers by the end of the run. If they're conscious anyway." He took a long drink from his bowl of soup then looked to Jia Li and Xel. "You all are being awfully quiet."

Jia Li smiled. "And you are certainly stealing the show anyway, Ned-mitsu," she replied coyly. "You seem to be getting on pretty well."

"Are you implying that I'm a scene stealer?" He laughed lightly. "So... tell me a bit about what you do when you're not doing your administrative duties?"

"Oh, typical stuff really," Gavrila said, "Since it is ze middle of ze damn Winter up in Cetatsenia it's generally inside. I read, browse ze internet, shop, go to ze bazs; stuff like zat. Oh! And I heard zere are public bazs in Demoness, does Fenwick have any of zem or are you all a bunch of prudes?" Her grin and laugh made it obvious that she was making a joke when she asked if they were 'prudes'.
