Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Ned nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Deseret is where the 'summer' palace is, so I could show you around there as well if you didn't want to stay in the city, and you're always welcome to visit New Aedmon."

Gavrila paid attention to Ned's response in order to try and determine whether the man was aware that she was flirting with him yet, but much to her frustration she didn't know. But she did her best to hide it and push on, silently hoping he knew but just wasn't letting on for some reason.

"Why zank you, and you can stop by Dreaptoras any time you want," she said, smirking, "But you have a summer palace? My cousin does not even have one of zose, he just lives in his little castle all year round; it sounds nice."

Ned nodded. "The palace in Deseret is relatively small, in comparison to Davion Palace in New Aedmon. We spend time there, partially because it's the biggest city in the country, and partially because it's just so nice there. Then again, you do occasionally have to deal with eruptions from Mount Helicon. The last one was pretty brutal."

Gavrila's mouth gaped open, and even Aurel gave a look of disbelief before quickly composing himself. "Your capital. It is built near an active volcano?" she said incredulously, "How does it still exist?"

Ned shook his head. "No no, Mount Helicon is to the north east of Deseret. It likes to spout off every now and again and particularly screw with air travel. Last time it decided to erupt was right in the middle of a drought as well, so the lightning storms and whatnot that accompanied the eruption started quite the forest fire. I spent a good week or two up there doing work."

"Fuck," was Gavrila's only response to embarrassing herself like that. He'd been talking about why they stayed in their summer palace, and then mentioned the volcano; she had assumed without quite hearing properly that it was near the capital. The fact that Ned had mentioned the capital being next to a mountain range hadn't helped.

"Well, now I feel like an idiot," she said dryly, then shrugged, "But zat does not sound good at all, I have never even seen an active volcano. Zere are not any in Cetatsenia. But you talk like zis happens on a regular basis, and I cannot imagine why anyone would decide to build a city near a mountain zat regularly explodes."

Jia Li shrugged. "Sometimes one doesn't have a choice. A lot of the island chains are like that unfortunately and I believe that Kyala's mountain range is technically considered 'active', but it hasn't erupted, mmm..." She shook her head and looked at Xel.

"It hasn't erupted in recent or 'ancient' memory," he supplied. "Though there are accounts that are questionable. However, she's right about the island chains. Many of them have limited land, so there's little choice and volcanic soil is very good for farming."

Ned laughed. "Don't worry about it. It went through a relatively long dormant stage... I'd say almost seventy years. It had a huge eruption about thirty-four years ago and has been having comparatively minor eruptions every five years or so since." Ned gestured to Xel. "He's definitely right there. We've got a few islands that have calm lava flows. They're very good for farming and naval stations."

"Well islands wiz calm lava flows are different, not particularly stop ze lava from rolling over you," Gavrila said, "But one zat violently explodes is almost completely fucking different. How old is Deseret? Was it built when ze volcano was inactive or somezing?" By this point Gavrila was too distracted and interested by the conversation to try flirting with Ned again.

"Deseret was one of the old capitols, pre-Unification. It was far enough away from the volcano that the eruptions didn't really affect the city the way it does now with air travel. It was a big farm center, one of the first cities to fall during the war because Emperor Chelear wanted to capture its food stores."
