Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Ned nodded. "They're the smaller nurse and reef sharks. They're not nearly as aggressive as other sharks and even some fish. I'd rather swim with them than some of the other reef inhabitants."

At that Gavrila practically beamed, "Okay now zat sounds pretty fucking awesome." Then she twisted around so that she could recline in her chair with her legs draped over the arm of the couch and her head lying on the other arm.

"You know, swimming wiz sharks is not one of zose zings I would zink I would want to do before ze opportunity presents itself," she said looking up at the ceiling, then turned to grin at Ned, "But now zat it has, I really want to do it."

"The rays are fun too. They'll swim up and let you pet them. If you're entering from the top and they see you before you get in they'll even come up to the sides and slap the pool edges with their fins for attention."

Gavrila laughed at that, finding the thought of rays acting like pets rather funny. "So zey like people huh?" she said with a grin, "Zey sound just like a great rat."

"Alright, I have to ask for more information on these things. Tell me about the great rats. Almost all the places I've been consider rodents a pest for the most part."

"Well, zey are just really big rats," Gavrila said, trying to shrug but finding it a bit awkward to do so in her current position, "In Cetatsenia you really do not find many cats or dogs, you just find people wiz rats ze size of a cat or small dog; zey have been domesticated for a long time."

"Huh. Seeing one of those will be an interesting experience, I'm sure," he replied. "So we're talking what, ten to fifteen pounds?"

Gavrila bobbed her head side to side a bit as she thought for a few moment, before giving Ned and answer. "I would say about zat, maybe a little heavier," she said, "Zough some of ze ones bred specifically to be big can be really goddamn big."

"Interesting. Though I think I'd be a little nervous around the teeth. I've seen what the little ones can do, I can only imagine what a great rat could do if it was displeased with you."

"It would gnaw you face off," Gavrila jokingly replied, "But yeah, if one does decide to attack it can get pretty damn nasty. But most of zem are actually pretty friendly, and zose zat are not are usually shy razer zen mean. Zough zere are some unfortunate exceptions."
