Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

The chitael raced out the door and then returned to the threshold, clearly waiting for Ned to do something. A more common game was to play hide and seek or to chase an individual, which is what she apparently wanted.

"Be gentle with her! She's getting old!" Jia Li called after Ned, and then turned back to Gavrila. "Really?" she asked with a smile. "How did that happen?"

"She came up wiz one of ze servant girls and wanted to play. And zen she sat on my bed and would not move," Gavrila said, chuckling a bit as she shrugged, "I zink ze servant said someone ze cat knew used to stay in zat room. Or somezing like zat. Adorable little kitty zough."

Jia Li shrugged. Without knowing the cat's name, she wouldn't know the history, and she really only knew the lineage of her chitael sisters: their mother and their litters. "It could be a litter mate or sometimes a chitael will adopt a specific person," she replied. Then her smile widened. "I'm glad xe wasn't too much trouble. With an animal that big you sometimes get no room. They're like children that way and it doesn't matter how big the bed is." She laughed. "The girls are at least trained to sleep at the foot of the bed, but that doesn't mean they don't try to sneak between Xel and I."

Ned threw caution to the wind, not to mention some decorum, and took off down the hall toward the exit to the courtyard, Nemesis hot on his heels. He deftly dodged a group of servants coming down the hall who quickly pressed themselves to the walls as he and the chitael dashed by.

He rounded the corner and tore through the door out into the courtyard, then looped in a circle and stopped, Nemesis screeching to a halt just behind trying to figure out which way Ned was going to run next. He feigned a few times and then ran back toward the door and headed back to Jia Li's apartment, earning a few less than approving glances as he and Nemesis ran back up the way they came.

He slid to a stop just outside the door and opened it again, gesturing inside. "After you, Nemesis," he said, slightly out of breath. Both came into the room breathing hard from the quick sprints. "Sorry about that. Maybe she'll be a little calmer now. As I was saying, how was everyone's night?"

Gavrila just stared at the out of breath Prince, a little surprised by the fact that he'd been running around inside the palace. It seemed like the kind of thing she'd do. She approved.

"My night was pretty good, and I zink I can say ze same for ze chitael I slept next to," Gavrila said, "At least, when I did not have a limb draped over her because I tend to spread out over ze bed."

She hadn't mentioned it to Jia Li, but the night hadn't been as easy as she let on. While the Knezinja did get a good night sleep and wasn't too bothered by the cat, they had had a bit of a contest over who got to have most of the bed. After all, Gavrila was the kind of person who took up a lot more space then necessary when she slept. She couldn't recall whether she or the cat had "won" in the end, as she'd gotten up as soon as Aurel had woken her up and hadn't bothered to really look at the big cat until she had already gotten out of bed.

Ned sat down at the table and pet Nemesis' head. "Oh, I'm sure that Hestia didn't mind. She was probably happy to have some company." He took a deep breath and let it out, finally calming his breathing to a normal rate. "And with the cardio that this one could give me, I don't know why I bothered going to the gym this morning." He nodded to the bowl with the fruit. "Would you mind passing some of the fruit?"

Jia Li greeted Nemesis as she returned, murmuring in baby talk to the cat, as Xel passed the fruit to Ned. Aphrodite perked her head up and appeared to be ready to wrestle her sister. "They have their own places to sleep," Xel said, shaking his head. "Though it is a stable at the base of the Plateau and most of them, if they can, try to sneak into a bed. I apologize if she did bother you. They tend to act a little spoiled when they've been around humans too long-" He glanced over at his wife, who was still talking to her pets. "-Especially if they have daily interaction and they're not a working cat."

"Nah, it was fine. And I liked it," Gavrila said, taking a piece of fruit as it was passed along to Ned, "Reminded me of when my great rats climb up into bed wiz me. And my boys are pretty damn spoiled too."

"I don't know, Vesta seems to enjoy curling up next to my bed when I'm at the palace at home," Ned replied as he took a few pieces from the bowl. "She only really gets on the bed to wake me up."

Xel shrugged. "Maybe it's the difference between a trained chitael and a feral one," he replied. "These two stay at the foot of the bed, though I think they still resent when they used to have a larger share. I can't really say; I never slept with a chitael until we were married."

Even in a king-sized bed, there didn't seem to be much room for four bodies, though it mattered less when Jia Li typically slept in Xel's arms.
