Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

"I agree wiz Jia Li, zere is no need to be pessimistic about it," Gavrila replied with a smile, "Zough I am not sure about ze cloning part; just seems a bit sci-fi in my opinion."

"Cloning has made remarkable leaps in the last few decades, at least where it has been able to avoid interference from religion," Xel replied. Despite Demoness' staunch support of the sciences and emphasis on advancement, manipulation of the human genome was illegal within its borders. This not only included cloning, but simpler techniques, such as stem cell research. As such, certain Demonessian giants, such as InGen and Biotech, conducted their research in other countries and it had created a black market. Xel and many high level government officials - those not involved in the Church - knew this, monitored it, and actually encouraged it; they didn't agree with Morante's assertion that life began at conception. Strangely, cloning and its sister processes were allowed so long as they were conducted on animals rather than humans. "The problem is that the clone's cells tend to shorten and act as if they were the donor's age rather than the chronological age of the subject," he continued. "However, cloning likely will not help a species repopulate since it would only encourage inbreeding. A program like that would require extensive genetic manipulation in order to be successful and we are currently not capable of such a thing."

Gavrila just shrugged, "As I said, you got to get to sci-fi levels in order for it to help." Gavrila was aware that cloning technology was advancing quite well; she wasn't ignorant of that fact. But she also knew that it was nowhere near being a viable technology for solving problems like this, and probably wouldn't be anytime in the near future.

"Which is something I intend to assist, so long as it doesn't offend the Church," Jia Li replied, though the caveat was added reluctantly; even if she did believe in Morante now, she didn't believe in everything they held sacred, and she tried her best to reconcile her old views with her new ones.

"Aya!" shouted a high-pitched voice. Both chitaels' ears perked up and they vacated their positions by Jia Li to greet the new arrival. Princess Adiwyn ran into the room and was promptly tackled by the chitaels, who were careful with the toddler while also wrestling with her. Jia Li wiped her hands off and rose to pluck her child from the eager grasps of her pets, and then smothered her with kisses. Xel shook his head, but he had a smile on his lips.

The elder Adiwyn entered a minute later and bowed. She removed her shoes and then politely reminded Adiko to also remove hers, though the lesson was ignored and the princess was carried back to the table by her mother, who placed her on her lap.

"Good morning, Grandmother," Xel respectfully greeted her and inclined his head.

"Good morning," she responded.

"Lady Tsukihana will be your guide today," he explained to Ned and Gavrila.

Jia Li looked up from her daughter. "Please, join us for breakfast, Grandmother," she said, indicating an open spot, and Adiwyn quietly joined them.

"Morning," Ned greeted Adiwyn. "Feeling up to babysitting some older people today?"

Gavrila and Aurel watched Adiko's entrance with a smile, though Aurel's smile briefly faded as he remembered seeing Gavrila's grandfather doing the same thing to Gavrila's mother that Jia Li was doing to her daughter, but never once had he seen Gavrila's mother do anything of the sort with her. He felt sad when he thought of what Gavrila had gone through, but since Gavrila's mother had been the one he had served during Gavrila's childhood he had not been able to say or do anything for the poor girl. But the smile quickly returned before even Gavrila was able to notice, and she was sitting right next to him. The Knezinja herself was smiling because she was rather fond of children, and couldn't wait to have her own.

Then Gavrila grinned at Adiwyn. "Hey there, it is a pleasure to meet you," she said, greeting the older woman, then turned to Ned, "And 'babysitting' seems like an appropriate term, just ask my sister. Shit. Cousin."

Adiwyn inclined her head when she spoke to Garvila. "We met briefly last night, Your Grace," she replied. "Though it was late and I believe more attention was on the little one than myself. I don't believe we have had a proper introduction. I am Tsukihana, servant to the princess."

Jia Li shook her head. "You are much more than that, Grandmother," she said.

Adiwyn smiled gratefully. "Once, Little One," she replied gently. Then she turned her head to Ned and smirked like a mother who was pretending not to catch her child doing something wrong. As she turned, the Cetatsens would notice something strange about Adiwyn's grey hair: the back was thin in a strange, diagonal line and her hair was braided into a fashion that attempted to cover up a scar. "That all depends on you, Your Grace," she replied teasingly. "Don't think I've forgotten the pranks you used to pull with your brother."

Ned held up his hands and laughed. "I would never presume. So, where are we headed today then? I know we're headed to the shrine."

Adiwyn nodded. "That's what I was told, but I am familiar with the whole city, so we can make stops along the way if something else catches your attention."

"Ze zoo," Gavrila said simply, "I want to visit ze zoo."

Both Gavrila and Aurel noticed the scar, but neither commented on it. Gavrila didn't really care that much; some people had scars and some didn't, it wasn't a big deal. And Aurel didn't ask because he knew very well that a scar could come from an innocent occurrence or from something the person would rather not remember. He himself had several scars from the Second Great War, the most prevalent of which was on his leg.
