Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Gavrila waved goodbye as the Empress left; she would have said something but she'd taken a large bite of fruit right as Jia Li was leaving, so her mouth was full. She quickly swallowed what she had in her mouth, coughing a bit, before shouting after the Demonessians, "See you later!" Then she went back to eating once again.

"You know what, I am ready to go whenever Ned is. Ozerwise I am just going to stay here and pig out," Gavrila said to Adiwyn with a laugh, then looked over to Ned himself, "So, we get to spend ze whole day togezer. Should be fun, huh?"

Ned nodded as he took another bit of food. "Agreed, it will be fun to be with someone who's seeing the city for the first time. It's a rather wondrous amalgamation of past and present."

"From what I have seen from it, it looks pretty cool," Gavrila agreed, a grin on her face, "But I zink ze whole nature/urban zing you got going on is cooler zan ze past/present stuff."

Adiwyn nodded. "It is very important to Morante to respect nature. Not only did the Goddess mandate it, but Daemonesu-kae's body makes up portions of the country," she replied. "The belief is best shown through the names our ancestors gave natural landmarks and the language itself. Once we started to industrialize, we needed to reconcile this belief with the need to advance. The result is how we've built our cities, but it wasn't an easy path and we did lose some of our heritage along the way." She paused. "Though in some ways, industrialization was better for the environment. We've concentrated our population into fewer cities, allowing nature to reclaim some of its land and a few of our villages to continue living their lives as they did centuries ago."

Gavrila listened to the older Demonessian woman speak, and when Adiwyn was finished the Knezinja just nodded. "Uh-huh," she said, and then grinned, "Damn, I should have brought my cousin Octavian wiz me; he would have loved to talk to some of your guys' priests."

Adiwyn smiled gently. "He would have had plenty of opportunity to talk with them at the cathedral and I'm sure some of the Council would have been willing to make time for him," she replied. "We will talk with at least one priest, Ruadha Kenichi, while we are at the shrine. He will be the one conducting the official tour. As I understand it, he has dedicated his life to maintaining the shrine and its history."

Gavrila chuckled a little as she responded to Adiwyn's answer. "Heh, if he wants to come over I am pretty sure he can. After all, Octavian is just a priest and he is ze Voivode's brozer. He is pretty interested in ozer religions," she said, "Hell, I want to know what he would say about Morante. If he does visit, I should ask him once he gets back."

Then Gavrila yawned and strecthed her arms out above her head before turning to Ned once again. "Alright, you ready to leave?" she asked, "Against all logic, I zink I am starting to get full."

Ned nodded. "I'm game whenever you all are." He stood up and brushed off his pants. "Shall we go adventuring?"

Gavrila stood up as soon as Ned did, followed by Aurel standing up much more slowly and deliberately. Gavrila stretched her arms out above her head and yawned once she was up, and then grinned at Ned. "Hell yeah," she said happily, "Zis is going to be so cool."

Adiwyn nodded and smiled as she rose. She put on her shoes and then patiently waited for Ned, Gavrila, and Aurel to do the same. "I hope you don't mind, but it won't just be the three of us. You are an important visitor and Davion-shiro is the Fenwicki prince, so we will have an escort. I believe the detail will only be three or four of the Jade Watch, so they will be visible, but they will make every attempt to be unnoticeable," she said. "They will meet us at the front door. I've also hired a private car to take us around the city."

After the three of them were ready, Adiwyn led them down the hallway through more of the living quarters. She was purposely avoiding the main hallway, through which Gavrila had originally entered, because it would already be busy at that time in the morning. The main hallway and a few of its tributaries also contained the offices of many important people, including ambassadors, so foot traffic was definitely high. The detour didn't take much longer than a direct route, especially after trying to navigate through many bodies, and they arrived at the front door after about twenty minutes. There were a small group of guards gathered just outside in the courtyard who were talking with the guards on duty.

As soon as they were close, one of the guards bowed. He was older, possibly in his sixties, and despite having a bare pate, he was able to grow his remaining hair past his shoulders, where it was kept in a simple ponytail. His hair was also still a vibrant Nedia brown and his blue eyes had faded only slightly. He was naturally slim and muscular, likely from his profession, but his face was weathered and despite his best efforts, still had a bit of stubble. He also bore a strong resemblance to Ariana Nedia, the handmaid who seemed to fawn over Jia Li, and it was enough to assume they were related. "Your Grace," he said to Gavrila. Her smirked slightly before addressing Ned the same way. "My name is Katsuragi Netoru and I will be in charge of your security detail for the day. Tsukihana-shiro tells me that you plan on visiting the Blasphemous Shrine today, but that you may also visit elsewhere." Adiwyn quickly explained their plan to visit the zoo first and eat lunch there. Netoru nodded before replying. "I think you'll enjoy it. The weather is supposed to be nice today," he said. He turned and introduced the three guards with him before adding, "We'll try to stay out of your way as much as possible."
