Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Ned clapped Netoru on the shoulder gently. "You know, you all can try to enjoy yourselves a little too."

Gavrila grinned and nodded her head, "Yeah, zere is no reason not to at least try. And hey, I got my own bodyguard here." She punctuated her last sentence with a gesture of her head towards Aurel, who nodded at Netoru, "I am Aurel Popescu; it is a pleasure."

Netoru smiled at Ned before he again bowed respectfully to Aurel. "For me as well, Uncle," he replied; like "grandfather", this was a respectful address, but given their relative closeness in age it was more appropriate to call him "uncle". He turned to Ned and shook his head. "Ned-mitsu, I think you know we cannot," he replied with a smile and as he turned to Gavrila added, "but we can converse if you're so inclined. Our vocation is unfortunately very serious."

Gavrila shrugged at Netoru's answer; she hadn't really expected anything different. "Yeah, I zought as much," she said, "Same wiz mine and my cousin's guards."

"Well, then you at least need to pay attention when we get near the carnivores. One might try to eat us," he said with a smirk.

Netoru raised an eyebrow. "I didn't think you tried to sneak into enclosures anymore," he replied dryly.

At that Gavrila raised an eyebrow and looked at Ned. "Anymore?" she asked, chuckling.

"I maintain that the tiger just needed a belly rub, that's all," Ned said. "I mean it was rolling around and I swear it was purring."

Gavrila just shook her head and grinned, "Okay, are you being serious or just making a joke? Because I cannot tell."

Netoru smiled slyly. "It is a joke, milady," he replied. "I have known him to do several reckless things, but that is not one of them." His smile widened. "Unless someone threatened to push you in."

Ned had dated his daughter and while he was purposely "unaware" of many of their activities during their teenage years, he was well aware that his daughter had often threatened Ned with physical harm. Most of the time the threats were exaggerated and playful, like being pushed into a tiger enclosure, but he had known his daughter to get into scraps with her mother, and then in college she had gotten into her fair share of bar fights. To his knowledge, however, she'd never gotten into a fist fight with Ned Davion. If she had, he likely would have still sided with his daughter even if he was under obligation to protect the Emperor's son; she was, after all, still his daughter.
