Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Gavrila grinned and laughed. "Heh, maybe. But I when I say 'asshole' I mean 'complete asshole', and zere is a huge difference," she said, "And I do go out into ze woods occasionally, but I would much razer spend my time in ze city. As for horses, you do not really see zem much up in ze highlands."

"So what do you do for fun in the city then?" he inquired. For the most part, Ned didn't have the time to spend time out in the cities where he was stationed. When he had free time it was either spent riding his horse, the occasional visit to Sacred Rock, or at the ranges with his brother if they could coordinate it.

Gavrila shrugged. "Hell, just stuff. Walk around, shop, baze," she said, "And I spend quite a bit of my free time in my palace doing whatever strikes my fancy. You?"

"It really depends on what is going on when I have free time. Sometimes I ride my horse, visit with my brother, things like that. Other times I come here to visit, like this little 'vacation'." He took a sip of his drink. "Other than that, just work, mostly."

Jia Li laughed. "You certainly do spend enough time working," she interjected. "Though I think I hear air quotes around 'vacation'. You don't always have to conduct business when you come see me," she teased.

Ned chuckled. "No, but I do have to go take care of business at the base here. Seems like there's always something, right?"

Gavrila chuckled at Ned's words, "I know how you feel. Sudest may be small, but when you are ruling a Knezate it seems like zere is always somezing going on zat you need to deal wiz. And I sure as hell do not envy my cousin; I can only imagine having to deal wiz an entire freaking country."

"I imagine your cousin has help; that's what his ministers are for," Jia Li replied and shook her head. "Unless he's a workaholic as well," she added, eyes shifting toward Ned. "Do you not have assistants?" she asked Gavrila. "Besides Aurel."

"Of course I have assistants, and Gavril does too," Gavrila said, rolling her eyes, "Does not change ze fact zat ruling a country or a Knezate can be a lot of work. And Aurel does not help wiz running Sudest."

"Zat is simply not my place," Aurel added.

Jia Li shook her head. "Maybe then it is just different. I may make a lot of the major decisions, but my ministers and other assistants run the day-to-day operations and allow me to simply be the diplomatic face." She nodded toward her husband. "Even Xel communicates my wishes to the Church so I only have to speak with them quarterly."

Of course, Jia Li's involvement with her own government was her choice. Her grandmother Lexisa oversaw everything whereas her father Ashuril allowed the nation to coast on her policies, rarely changing them unless prompted. The government Jia Li inherited was quite different from Lexisa's legacy and she'd had to struggle to reclaim some of her functions; some, like military matters, hadn't been reclaimed at all and were instead run by trusted advisers, like her husband and Megumi Orikasa.
